Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Australian passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Taiwan. Taiwan does not require 6 months of remaining validity beyond your departure date, but some airlines may enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Recommended for visa-free entry
Immigration officers at Taoyuan and Kaohsiung airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Officers may ask for a hotel booking or an invitation letter from a host. Keep a printed confirmation or a digital copy on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Carry evidence of sufficient funds for your stay — a bank statement or credit card showing available credit works. No fixed minimum amount is published, but having at least NT$10,000 (approx. A$500) per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
e-Gates save time
Australian ePassport holders aged 12+ can use the automated e-Gates at Taoyuan and Kaohsiung airports. No arrival card needed – the kiosk scans your passport and fingerprints. Look for the purple signs after disembarking.
No extensions – overstay fines
Taiwan does not allow extending a visa-free stay. Overstaying even one day can incur a fine of TWD 1,000–10,000 and a re-entry ban. Set a calendar reminder to leave before day 90.

What happens at the border

1
Before you fly
Check your passport has 6 months validity and at least one blank page. Print or have digital copies of your return flight and accommodation details ready – airlines often ask for them.
2
At Taipei Taoyuan or Kaohsiung International Airport
After landing, proceed to immigration. You'll see two queues: one for manual counters and one for automated e-Gates (if eligible). Australian ePassport holders aged 12+ can use the e-Gates – just scan your passport and follow the fingerprint prompts. If you use the manual queue, hand your passport and filled-in arrival card to the officer.
3
Arrival card
You'll receive an arrival card on the plane or at the airport before immigration. Fill it out in English with your passport details, flight number, and local address. If you use the e-Gate, you may not need a paper card – the kiosk handles it electronically.
4
Clearing customs
After immigration, collect your luggage and proceed to customs. There's nothing special to declare unless you have significant cash (over TWD 100,000) or restricted goods. Green channel for most travellers.
