Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Brazil
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your planned departure date from Brazil. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Brazil
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave Brazil within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — airlines also check this before you fly.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Evidence of sufficient money for your stay
Immigration can ask for bank statements, credit card limits, or cash to show you can support yourself. A daily minimum of around R$ 200 (about $40 USD) is a safe benchmark — have a recent statement or card handy.Recommended
Overstay = fine + future problems
If you overstay even by one day, you'll be fined R$ 100 per day (max R$ 1,000). Pay at the Federal Police before departure. Overstays are recorded and can lead to denied entry on future trips.
TDAC form is mandatory
You must complete the Traveler's Declaration (TDAC) online within 72 hours before your flight. It's free. Without the QR code, you may be delayed at check-in or immigration. Do it before you leave for the airport.

What happens at the border

1
Before you fly: complete the TDAC form
Within 72 hours of your departure, fill out the Traveler's Declaration (TDAC) online at https://www.gov.br/tdac. It's free. You'll get a QR code — save it on your phone or print it. Airlines may ask for it at check-in.
2
At the airport in Canada
At check-in, the airline will verify your passport validity (6+ months) and your return ticket. They may also ask for the TDAC QR code. Boarding pass issued.
3
Arrival at a Brazilian airport (GRU, GIG, BSB, VCP)
Follow signs to 'Passport Control' (not 'Transit'). Join the queue for foreign visitors. Have your passport, return ticket, and TDAC QR code ready. The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry. No visa fee. The whole process takes 5–15 minutes.
4
After passport control
Collect your luggage, then proceed to customs. There's a 'nothing to declare' green channel if you have no restricted items. If selected for inspection, you'll need to show your bags.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Brazil before the 90 days are up. If you want to stay longer, you can apply for a tourist visa at a Brazilian consulate before travel (costs R$ 220 / ~$44 USD, valid 5 years, allows 90 days per entry extendable up to 180 days). Or you can leave and re-enter — but be careful: multiple consecutive entries may raise suspicion.
You'll be fined R$ 100 (~$20 USD) per day, up to a maximum of R$ 1,000 (~$200 USD). Pay at the Federal Police office before you leave. Overstaying can also affect future entries, so avoid it.
It's not required for direct travel from Canada, but it's strongly recommended for all travellers. If you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, you'll need proof of vaccination. The vaccine is safe and widely available — get it at least 10 days before travel.
Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism and business (meetings, conferences). Working remotely for a foreign employer is a grey area. For a clear legal status, apply for the Digital Nomad Visa (VITEM XIV) — costs R$ 1,000 (~$200 USD), valid 1 year, renewable. Requires proof of remote income of at least ~$1,500 USD/month.
The Traveler's Declaration (TDAC) is a free online form you must complete within 72 hours before your flight to Brazil. It collects basic info like passport details, flight number, and accommodation. You'll get a QR code — save it on your phone or print it. Airlines may ask for it at check-in, and immigration officers scan it on arrival.
The top reasons are: (1) insufficient proof of funds (30% of denials) — carry bank statements or credit card proof; (2) no return ticket (25%) — always have a booked onward ticket; (3) suspicious travel patterns like multiple short trips back-to-back (20%) — space out visits or carry evidence of ties to home; (4) expired or damaged passport (15%) — ensure 6+ months validity; (5) previous overstays (10%) — avoid overstaying and carry proof of compliance.
