Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Canadian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Mexico. Mexico does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines sometimes enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mexico
Immigration officers at Mexican airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave within 180 days. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary ready — they rarely accept verbal explanations.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a return ticket. A printed hotel confirmation or a letter from a friend in Mexico covers this. Airbnb bookings work fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Immigration may ask for proof of sufficient funds for your stay. A credit card statement or bank balance showing a few thousand dollars is usually enough. No fixed minimum is published, but having $500–$1,000 USD equivalent in cash or card helps.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines and immigration will deny boarding or entry if your passport has less than 6 months of validity left from your entry date. Check your passport now, not the night before your flight.
Keep your immigration form slip
The tear-off slip you get at immigration is required when you leave Mexico. If you lose it, you'll need to visit an INM office for a replacement — expect a queue and a small fee.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the immigration form
You'll receive a paper or digital form on the plane or at the airport. Fill in your passport details, flight info, and accommodation address. Keep the tear-off slip — you'll need it when you leave.
2
Queue at immigration
At major airports like Cancún or Mexico City, join the 'Foreigners' or 'All Passports' line. Have your passport, completed form, and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport and hand back the form slip.
3
Collect luggage and proceed
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. You may be asked to press a button for a random luggage check. If green, you walk straight out.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 180-day visa-free period is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Mexico and re-enter, or apply for a temporary resident visa at a Mexican consulate before your trip. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Mexican immigration. Renew your Canadian passport at least 6 months before your planned travel date. A passport renewal by mail takes about 20 business days in Canada.
No, if you are transiting through a Mexican airport and staying airside (not passing immigration), you do not need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport, you must meet the same entry requirements as a tourist.
Yes, you can work remotely for a foreign employer without a visa, as long as you do not work for a Mexican company or receive payment from a Mexican source. The 180-day stay is for tourism and business activities, not local employment.
Same as at the airport: a valid Canadian passport (6+ months), and be ready to state your purpose of visit and length of stay. Land crossings are generally less strict, but you may still be asked for a return ticket or proof of funds.
The FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple) is free for stays up to 7 days by land. For longer stays or air arrivals, the fee is about 600 MXN (around 30 CAD) and is usually included in your airline ticket. If not, you pay at the immigration counter.
You must get a replacement before leaving Mexico. Go to the nearest INM (Instituto Nacional de Migración) office. In Cancún, it's at the airport; in Mexico City, there is an office near the Zócalo. Bring your passport and flight details. There may be a small fee.
