Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Canadian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in South Korea. Unlike some countries, Korea does not require 6 months of remaining validity — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines may still enforce the 6-month rule, so check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from South Korea
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket at the counter. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready. Without one, you may be denied boarding or entry.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter from your host. Immigration may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Officers can ask to see evidence of funds — bank statements, credit card limits, or cash. There's no fixed minimum, but having access to at least 1,000,000 KRW (~$1,000 CAD) for a short trip covers most situations.Recommended
K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization)
Pre-travel authorization for visa-free visitors
As of 2025, Canada is currently exempt from the K-ETA requirement — you do not need to apply. Check the official K-ETA portal before each trip in case the policy changes. If required in the future, apply at k-eta.go.kr (₩10,000 fee, valid 2 years).Check K-ETA statusOptional
6-month passport validity is strictly enforced
If your passport expires within 6 months of your entry date, you will be denied boarding. Check your passport now, not the night before your flight.
No visa, but still need a return ticket
Even though you don't need a visa, immigration will ask for proof of onward travel. A screenshot of your return flight booking is enough.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book a return or onward ticket. Reserve your first night's accommodation. Get travel insurance and a local SIM or eSIM. Save all confirmations as screenshots on your phone.
2
Fill out the arrival card on the plane
You'll get a small arrival card and a customs declaration form. Fill them out in English or Korean. Have your passport number and accommodation address ready.
3
Go through immigration at Incheon or other airports
Join the 'Foreign Passport' queue. Hand over your passport and arrival card. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly. They'll stamp you in for up to 180 days.
4
Collect your luggage and clear customs
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel. Walk through the customs channel. If you have nothing to declare, use the green 'Nothing to Declare' lane.
5
Activate your eSIM or buy a local SIM
If you got an Airalo eSIM, it activates as soon as you land. Otherwise, buy a SIM at the airport convenience store or a mobile shop in the arrivals hall.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a different visa (like a tourist visa extension or a long-stay visa) before your 180 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban from re-entry.
You won't be allowed to board your flight. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before you travel.
Not required for visa-free entry. But if you look like you might work illegally or overstay, the immigration officer could ask. Have a credit card or bank statement handy just in case.
Technically, no. The visa-free entry is for tourism and short business visits only. Working remotely for a foreign employer is a grey area — many people do it, but it's not officially allowed. If you're caught, you could be deported.
You'll be fined. The amount depends on how long you overstay — typically around 100,000 KRW per day. You may also be banned from re-entering South Korea for a period. Don't risk it.
No, not for stays under 90 days. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days (up to 180), you still don't need to register — the visa-free entry covers the full 180 days. But if you're staying for work or study, you need a proper visa.
No. Immigration requires proof of onward travel. A one-way ticket will likely get you denied boarding or refused entry. Always have a return or onward ticket.
