Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport
Get your visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport. Fill in the arrival form, pay the fee in cash (USD, EUR, or NPR), and hand over two passport photos. The visa costs $30 USD for 15 days, $50 USD for 30 days, and $125 USD for 90 days. Have exact change ready — the counter runs out of small bills.Check visa feesRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date
Your Canadian passport needs at least 6 months of validity left from the day you leave Nepal. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding. Two blank pages are required for the visa sticker.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Nepal
Immigration officers at Tribhuvan International Airport ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket before issuing the visa on arrival. A printed itinerary or a digital copy on your phone works. If you are overlanding to India, show your bus or train booking.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or trekking permit
Have your first night's hotel confirmation ready — either printed or on your phone. If you are trekking, a TIMS card or ACAP permit also counts as proof of where you will be. Officers rarely ask, but it speeds things up if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Carry at least $200 USD equivalent in cash or have a bank statement handy. Nepal is a cash-heavy country — credit cards are not accepted everywhere. Immigration may ask how you plan to fund your trip, especially for longer stays.Recommended
Cash only — no cards
The visa on arrival counter does not accept credit or debit cards. Bring crisp US dollars (no older than 2009, no tears or marks). If you pay in NPR, you'll get a slightly worse exchange rate.
Photo fee if you forget
If you don't bring passport photos, the counter will take one for a small fee (around NPR 200). It's fine, but adds a few minutes to the queue.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the arrival card and visa form
On the plane or at the airport, grab the white arrival card and the tourist visa application form. Both are free. Fill in your passport details, flight info, and hotel address.
2
Queue at the Visa on Arrival counter
At Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' after baggage claim. There are separate counters for different visa durations (15, 30, 90 days). Hand over your forms, passport, and fee.
3
Pay the visa fee and get your sticker
Pay in USD, EUR, or NPR. The officer will take your photo, stamp your passport, and hand you a receipt. The whole process takes 10–20 minutes if it's not busy.
4
Proceed to immigration
After getting your visa sticker, walk to the immigration counters. Show your passport with the visa and the arrival card. They'll stamp you in. Done.

Frequently asked questions

For a 15-day visa: US$30. For 30 days: US$50. For 90 days: US$125. Pay in USD, EUR, or NPR at the counter. No credit or debit cards accepted.
Yes, but it's not automatic. You can apply for an extension at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu (or in Pokhara). The fee is US$45 for 15 days, plus a processing fee. Extensions beyond 150 days in a calendar year are not allowed.
If you're staying in the airport and not clearing immigration, no visa is needed. But if you leave the transit area for any reason, you'll need a visa on arrival.
Yes, at major land crossings like Kakarbhitta (India border) and Kodari (China border). The process is the same as at the airport — fill out the form, pay the fee, get the sticker. But some smaller crossings may not offer visa on arrival, so check ahead.
Tribhuvan International Airport operates 24/7, so the visa on arrival counter is staffed for all arriving flights. However, during very late hours (midnight to 4 AM), there may be only one officer, so expect a longer wait.
Technically, immigration can ask for proof of sufficient funds (about US$50 per day) and a confirmed hotel. In practice, they rarely check for Canadians. But having a booking confirmation and a credit card is smart.
Nepal does offer an e-visa for some nationalities, but Canadians are not eligible. You must get the visa on arrival. Don't bother with third-party e-visa sites — they're scams.
