Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from your entry date into Brazil. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding. Immigration officers at GRU and GIG are strict about this rule.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Brazil
Immigration at all Brazilian airports asks for a return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. A bus ticket to Argentina or a flight to another country works. If you arrive without one, expect to buy a ticket on the spot at the airline counter.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed or digital hotel reservation for at least the first few nights. If staying with a friend, a signed letter with their address and CPF number helps. Officers rarely ask, but when they do, they want to see a specific address.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least R$ 200 per day of your stay. A credit card with a reasonable limit usually satisfies the officer. I have never been asked for this at São Paulo or Rio, but it is in the rulebook.Recommended
Extension is possible but not automatic
You can apply for a one‑time 90‑day extension at Polícia Federal, but it is not guaranteed. You must apply before your initial 90 days expire and show sufficient funds and a reason. If you plan to stay longer, start the process early.
Overstay fines are real
If you overstay even by one day, you'll be fined about 100 BRL per day (capped around 1,000 BRL). The fine must be paid at the Polícia Federal office before departure. Plan your travel dates carefully.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Immigration Counter
At airports like GRU (São Paulo) or GIG (Rio de Janeiro), follow signs to 'Passaportes' or 'Imigração'. Join the queue for non‑Mercosur passports.
2
Hand Over Your Passport
Give the officer your passport. They'll check validity and a blank page, then ask a few questions: purpose of visit, where you're staying, how long you'll stay. Answer briefly and confidently.
3
Get Your Entry Stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the authorized stay period (usually 90 days). Check that the stamp is correct before walking away.
4
Receive the Entry Form
In some airports, you may be handed a small paper form (Cartão de Entrada). Keep it safe – you'll need to show it when leaving. If you lose it, it's replaceable but a hassle.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you may request a one‑time extension of up to 90 days at any Polícia Federal office before your initial 90 days expire. Approval is not guaranteed and requires proof of sufficient funds and a valid reason. If granted, the total stay cannot exceed 180 days within a 12‑month period.
You will be fined about 100 BRL per day overstayed, capped at roughly 1,000 BRL (around 200 EUR). The fine must be paid at any Federal Police office before departure. Overstaying can also affect future visa‑free access.
No. The visa‑free entry is strictly for tourism, business meetings, or short‑term cultural exchanges. Any paid work, remote work for a foreign employer that requires a local contract, or formal study (enrolled in a Brazilian institution) requires the appropriate visa.
Officially, Brazil does not require a yellow fever certificate for German citizens unless you have traveled to a country with yellow fever risk within 90 days prior. However, the vaccine is highly recommended if you plan to visit the Amazon region, and some airlines may ask for proof. It's best to get vaccinated and carry the yellow card.
No, travel insurance is not a legal requirement to enter Brazil. However, medical care can be expensive for uninsured visitors, especially for emergencies or evacuation. It's strongly advised to purchase comprehensive travel and medical insurance covering your entire stay.
Report the loss immediately to the local Polícia Federal and get a police report (Boletim de Ocorrência). Then contact the German Embassy or consulate (in Brasília, Rio de Janeiro, or São Paulo) to apply for an emergency travel document. This can take 1–3 business days.
Yes, temporary German passports are accepted for visa‑free travel to Brazil, provided they meet the 6‑month validity and blank page requirements. Immigration treats them the same as regular passports.
