German passport holders don't need a visa for tourism or business trips to Mexico up to 180 days. As of 2025, you just need a valid passport and you'll fill out a tourist card (FMM) upon arrival.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Mexico. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mexico
Immigration officers at Mexico City and Cancún routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot of your booking ready — they rarely check the actual flight status, just the itinerary.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation or the address and phone number of where you are staying. Officers at Cancún airport ask for this more often than at Mexico City.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card statement showing at least $500 USD available. Immigration rarely asks for it, but if they do, they want to see you have enough for your stay without working.Recommended
Keep your FMM stub safe
The detachable part of the FMM is your proof of legal entry. You must present it when leaving Mexico. If you lose it, expect to visit an INM office and pay a fine/replacement fee. Store it in your passport.
Visa-free ≠ permission to work
Even unpaid volunteer work or remote employment for a foreign company may be considered a violation of your tourist status. If you plan to work while in Mexico, apply for the correct visa beforehand. Enforcement is rare but can result in deportation or bans.

What happens at the border

1
Before you travel
Check your passport validity – must have at least 6 months left from your entry date. If you need a new passport, apply early (German passport renewals take 4–6 weeks). Also, make sure you have a copy of your flight itinerary (return/onward).
2
On arrival in Mexico
Whether landing at Cancún, Mexico City (MEX), or elsewhere, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). Foreigners and nationals line up separately – go to the 'Extranjeros' queue. Have your passport ready and the FMM form if you filled it online. The flight attendant may hand out paper FMMs on the plane. The officer will scan your passport, ask your purpose of visit and length of stay, then give you the FMM stub. Keep it safe.
3
During your stay
Carry your passport and FMM stub with you – Mexican authorities can ask for identification at any time. If you plan to leave Mexico by land (e.g., to Guatemala or Belize), the FMM must be surrendered at the border. Do not lose the stub; losing it requires a formal replacement at an INM office (fees apply).
4
Departure
At the airport, check in for your flight, then proceed through security. After security, go to immigration (INM) for passport control – present your FMM stub and passport. The officer will collect the stub and stamp your passport. Then head to your gate.

Frequently asked questions

No, German citizens cannot extend the standard FMM stay beyond 180 days. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Mexico (e.g., to a neighboring country) and re-enter, but immigration may question frequent returns. For long-term stays, consider applying for a temporary resident visa at a Mexican consulate before travel.
No. The visa-free entry and FMM are for tourism, business (meetings, conferences), or transit only. Any paid work, volunteering with an organisation, or remote work for a non-Mexican company is technically prohibited. For digital nomads, the official stance is unclear, but enforcement is rare for short stays. For certainty, get a temporary residence permit.
You must go to an Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) office to request a replacement. Offices are in major cities and at some airports (e.g., Cancun, Mexico City). Bring your passport, a photocopy, and pay a fee (around 500–700 MXN, about €25–35, subject to change). Expect a processing time of 1–2 hours. Without a valid FMM, you may face fines or delays when exiting.
No, the same visa-free rules apply everywhere in Mexico. Cancún and Quintana Roo have no special requirements beyond the standard FMM. The airport queues can be longer during peak hours, so allow extra time.
No. Each FMM is valid for a single entry. If you leave Mexico (even for a day trip), you must surrender the stub and get a new one on your next arrival. Frequent land crossings may raise questions about your intentions.
Same as air: valid passport with 6 months validity, blank page, and you'll fill out an FMM at the border crossing. The immigration officer will stamp your passport and issue the FMM at no cost. Note that some border crossings have limited hours. You may also be asked for proof of onward travel (e.g., a bus ticket out of Mexico), so have a copy if possible.
Technically no, but the airline or bus company may ask for onward travel proof. If crossing by land, you can show a bus ticket out of Mexico or simply explain your itinerary. Customs officers are generally flexible.
