You can get a Visa on Arrival (VoA) for Indonesia as a German passport holder, valid for up to 30 days for tourism, business, or transit. You pay the fee upon arrival. The process is straightforward, but you must meet these requirements before you travel.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa on arrival at major Indonesian airports (Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, Medan, etc.). Pay 500,000 IDR in cash (USD or EUR also accepted at some counters) — have exact change ready. The visa allows 30 days of stay and costs about $35 USD.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Indonesia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, they will deny boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Return ticket
Immigration officers at Jakarta and Bali routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward flight booking ready — they will check the date matches your visa duration.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking
Have your hotel reservation or accommodation address ready — immigration may ask where you are staying. A printed booking confirmation or a screenshot on your phone works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient funds
Carry at least $1,000 USD in cash or have a credit card with available balance. Immigration rarely asks, but budget airlines sometimes check at check-in for Bali flights.Recommended
Carry exact cash – no change given
VoA counters across Indonesia do not provide change if you overpay. Some airports have had reports of officials pocketing extra. Bring the exact 500,000 IDR per person in small bills to avoid issues.
Passport validity enforced strictly
Indonesian immigration won't let you in if your passport has less than 6 months validity from your arrival date. This rule is applied without exception, even if you hold a VoA. Double-check your passport's expiry before you leave.
VoA is non-extendable – plan your exit
Unlike some other countries' VoA options, Indonesia's standard VoA cannot be extended. Overstaying will cost you a daily fine and may lead to deportation and a re-entry ban. Book your departure within 30 days.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport
After exiting the plane, follow the 'Visa on Arrival' or 'VoA' signs. At major airports like Bali (DPS) or Jakarta (CGK), counters are clearly marked. If you arrive without a visa, this is where you go.
2
Pay the fee at the VoA counter
Hand over your passport and 500,000 IDR (exact cash). The officer will issue a receipt and a sticker for your visa. The process takes 2–5 minutes if there's no queue. Keep the receipt.
3
Proceed to immigration
Move to the main immigration queue. Present your passport (with the new VoA sticker), the filled arrival card, and your return ticket (if asked). The officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day stay stamp.
4
Collect your bags and exit
After immigration, retrieve checked luggage, then proceed through customs. No further visa steps are needed. You're officially in Indonesia for up to 30 days.

Frequently asked questions

No — the standard VoA is not extendable. You must leave Indonesia before the 30th day. Overstaying costs 1,000,000 IDR per day (about €60). If you need more time, consider applying for a tourist visa (e.g., B211A) before you travel, which can be extended.
The official fee is 500,000 Indonesian Rupiah per person. This is around €30, but the rate fluctuates. Pay only in IDR and carry the exact amount — airport counters rarely have change.
No. Only cash in Indonesian Rupiah is accepted. No credit cards, no other currencies. Avoid using airport ATMs if you don't have IDR before the queue — they may not be reliable.
You will be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry at immigration. There is no exception. Renew your passport before booking your trip.
The VoA itself has no health requirements. However, if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever, you must show a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Otherwise, no mandatory vaccinations apply for German citizens.
Most international airports offer VoA — including Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK), Surabaya (SUB), Medan (KNO), Lombok (LOP), and others. Some smaller airports may not offer it. Always check the latest list from the Indonesian immigration website.
The VoA is single-entry only. Each time you re-enter, you must pay and get a new VoA. If you plan multiple entries, consider a multiple-entry visa (e.g., D212) before your trip.
