ETA-IL applicationETA-IL: Israel's Electronic Travel Authorisation, mandatory for all visa-exempt nationals since August 2024. Apply free at israel-entry.piba.gov.il — usually approved instantly.
Israel Electronic Travel Authorisation
Apply for your ETA-IL at israel-entry.piba.gov.il before you fly. It's free and usually approved instantly — I got mine in under a minute. You'll need your passport details and flight information.Apply for ETA-ILRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for duration of stay
Your German passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Israel — no 6-month rule here. Airlines check this at check-in, so make sure it's not expiring during your trip.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Israel
Immigration officers at Ben Gurion Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they'll check it before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Keep a bank statement or credit card handy. Immigration doesn't usually check, but if they do, they want to see you have enough for accommodation and expenses — around 1,500 ILS per week is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines often check the 6-month rule before letting you board. If your passport expires sooner, you may be refused travel. Check it well before your trip.
Entry may be delayed for questioning
Israel's border security asks detailed questions. This is routine. Have your accommodation and return details handy. Stay calm and answer truthfully.

What happens at the border

1
Before you travel
Check your passport has at least 6 months validity and one blank page. No visa is needed, so you can proceed to book your travel.
2
At the airport (Ben Gurion)
After landing, follow signs to Passport Control. There are two queues: one for Israeli citizens, one for foreign nationals. Join the foreign passport queue. Have your passport ready and be prepared to answer questions about your trip purpose, accommodation, and onward travel.
3
Border interview
The officer may ask where you're staying, how long you're visiting, and what you do for work. Answer clearly and honestly. They may also ask to see a return ticket or proof of accommodation.
4
Getting your entry stamp
Once cleared, you'll receive an entry stamp in your passport or a small blue entry card. The stamp or card shows your allowed stay – usually up to 90 days. Keep the card if given; you may need it when departing.
