German citizens can get a visa on arrival in Jordan. No need to apply before you travel. The process is straightforward at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman and at most land borders.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
Jordanian immigration enforces the 6-month validity rule strictly. Airlines check this at check-in and will deny boarding if your passport expires sooner. Carry a photocopy of your passport data page as backup.Required
Visa on arrival
Single-entry visa issued at Jordanian airports and land borders
Pay 40 JOD (about $56 USD) in cash at the visa counter before immigration — they accept Jordanian dinars, US dollars, euros, and British pounds. Have the exact amount ready to avoid change delays. The visa is valid for 30 days and cannot be extended.Apply onlineRequired
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Jordan
Immigration officers at Queen Alia International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air enforce this before issuing a boarding pass. A flight reservation or bus ticket to Israel (via the King Hussein Bridge) also works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers occasionally ask for your first night's hotel confirmation, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked itinerary. A printed or digital booking confirmation with the hotel's phone number satisfies the request. Hosts in Jordan can provide an invitation letter if you're staying privately.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officials rarely ask for bank statements, but having a credit card or cash equivalent to $500 USD removes any doubt. ATMs are widely available in Amman and Aqaba, but carry some Jordanian dinars for the visa fee and taxi fares.Recommended
Jordan Pass saves you the visa fee
If you plan to visit Petra, Jerash, and other sites, the Jordan Pass (70–80 JOD) covers entry to most attractions AND waives the 40 JOD visa fee — effectively making the visa free. You must stay at least 3 nights. Buy it online before you travel.
Cash only for visa on arrival
There is no ATM before the bank counter at Queen Alia Airport. Bring enough cash to pay the fee. ATMs are available after immigration, but by then you've already paid. If you only have euros or dollars, the bank will accept them but give change in Jordanian dinars.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Queen Alia International Airport
After disembarking, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and 'Banking'. Before reaching immigration counters, stop at the bank kiosk (on the left, just past duty-free). Pay the visa fee in cash — they accept Jordanian dinars, euros, or US dollars. Receive a receipt.
2
Proceed to immigration
Hand over your passport, the receipt from the bank, and your boarding pass if asked. The officer will take your photo and fingerprints (both hands). They'll stamp your passport with a visa valid for up to 30 days. No extra forms needed.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, go to baggage claim, then customs. Sometimes there's a random bag check, but usually you just walk out. Keep your visa receipt, as you may need it for hotel registration.
4
If entering by land border
At the Sheikh Hussein Bridge (from Israel) or the King Hussein Bridge (West Bank), the process is similar — pay the visa fee in cash at the border bank. At the Sheikh Hussein crossing, the visa on arrival is available for German citizens. At the King Hussein Bridge, it's sometimes trickier; many travellers arrange a visa beforehand to avoid hassle.

Frequently asked questions

A single-entry visa costs 40 Jordanian dinars (about 55 EUR). A multiple-entry visa costs 60 JOD (about 82 EUR). You must pay in cash at a bank counter inside the airport or at land borders. Cards are not accepted.
Yes. The standard visa on arrival is valid for 30 days. You can extend it once for an additional 30 days at the Immigration Department in Amman (near the Fourth Circle). The extension costs 30 JOD. Do this before your initial 30 days expire.
If you're staying airside and not passing through immigration, you don't need a visa. For layovers over 8 hours, some airlines offer free transit visas, but you need to check with your carrier. If you want to leave the airport, you'll need the standard visa on arrival (same cost).
Most land borders offer visa on arrival for German citizens, including the Sheikh Hussein Bridge (from Israel). However, at the King Hussein Bridge (Allenby) from the West Bank, it's not always available. It's safer to arrange a visa through the Jordanian embassy beforehand if crossing there. At the southern Aqaba border from Eilat (Israel), the process is smooth — same fee and procedure.
At King Hussein International Airport in Aqaba, the visa on arrival process is the same as in Amman. Note that if you're staying in Aqaba or visiting the south, you might be eligible for the 'Jordan Pass' which waives the visa fee if you stay 3+ nights. Check the official Jordan Pass website before you travel.
The Jordan Pass is a tourist package that includes entry to many sites and, importantly, waives the visa fee if you arrive and stay for at least 3 nights. You still need to get a visa stamp on arrival — the Jordan Pass means you don't have to pay the 40 JOD fee. Show your Jordan Pass at the bank counter instead of paying. This applies at all airports and land borders.
No. The visa on arrival is single-entry unless you paid for a multiple-entry visa (60 JOD). If you have a single-entry visa and leave Jordan, you'll need to pay again for a new visa upon return — unless you have a valid multiple-entry visa.
