Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Apply at the airport upon arrival
Land at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo and head to the visa on arrival counter before immigration. Pay the $50 USD fee in cash (USD, EUR, or GBP accepted) — credit cards sometimes fail. The officer stamps you in for 30 days, no extensions allowed.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Sri Lanka enforces the 6-month validity rule strictly — if your passport expires sooner, the airline may deny boarding. Carry a photocopy of the bio page as backup.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Sri Lanka
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket at the visa on arrival counter. A flight booking out of Sri Lanka within 30 days works — they rarely check the exact date, but you need something.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready — officers occasionally ask for it during the visa on arrival process. A booking.com reservation with your name and dates covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Carry at least $100 USD in cash or a credit card statement — immigration may ask how you'll fund your trip. ATMs are plentiful in Colombo, but having cash on arrival avoids hassle.Recommended
Visa on arrival is convenient, but plan for queues
Colombo airport can be busy, especially during evening arrivals. The visa on arrival queue may take 30–60 minutes. If you want a faster process, get the free ETA online beforehand – you'll use a separate, often shorter queue.
Your visa on arrival is NOT extendable
The standard visa you get at the airport is single-entry and strictly 30 days. There's no extension process for this visa type. If you need more than 30 days, apply for a tourist visa in advance or plan to leave before day 30.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before your flight
Check your passport: 6+ months validity and one blank page. Save a copy of your return ticket (print or phone). Fill out the arrival card they hand out on the plane – it asks for your name, passport number, and Sri Lanka address.
2
Queues at immigration counters
After landing at Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. Join the queue. Hand over your passport, completed arrival card, and – if asked – your return ticket. No extra forms needed.
3
Receive your visa sticker
The immigration officer will place a visa sticker in your passport. Check the printed expiry date – it gives you 30 days from entry. The visa is single-entry and not extendable, so plan your exit before day 30.
4
Proceed through customs and baggage claim
After the stamp, walk to baggage claim. Fill out a customs declaration only if you have items to declare (most tourists skip it). Collect your bags and exit. Welcome to Sri Lanka!
