You don't need a visa to enter Sweden as a German passport holder — EU free movement covers you. Travel, live, and work without immigration restrictions. Just keep your passport or national ID card valid for your entire stay. Though a passport with 6 months validity is common for international travel, any valid EU ID works.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your German passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Sweden. Sweden doesn't enforce the 6-month rule for EU nationals — your passport just needs to cover your stay. Airlines rarely check validity for intra-Schengen flights.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Arlanda and other Swedish airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. You need proof you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days of entering. A flight to any non-Schengen country works — even a cheap bus ticket to Oslo counts.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Swedish border officers sometimes ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host ready. I've been asked for this twice at Arlanda — once when arriving late at night.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry at least €50 per day of your stay in cash or a card with available credit. Swedish immigration rarely checks this for German passport holders, but I've seen them ask backpackers. A bank statement from the last 30 days covers this.Recommended
EU Freedom of Movement
As a German passport holder, you benefit from the EU's freedom of movement. Sweden cannot refuse you entry, require a visa, or ask for proof of onward travel. Your only requirement is a valid ID document.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Swedish border (airport, ferry, or train)
When you land at Stockholm Arlanda, Gothenburg Landvetter, or any other port of entry, join the queue for EU/EEA citizens. Present your German passport or national ID card. The officer may ask your purpose and duration of stay — answer briefly (e.g., 'tourism,' 'visiting friends,' or 'work').
2
Receive entry stamp (or not)
As an EU citizen, you do not get an entry stamp by default. If you want proof of entry for later travel outside Schengen, you can politely ask the officer to stamp your passport. Otherwise, they will wave you through.
3
Proceed to baggage claim and exit
After passport control, collect your luggage if any and walk through customs. Use the green channel if you have nothing to declare (goods under duty-free limits), or the red channel if you have items exceeding allowances. That's it — you're free to enter Sweden.
