British passport holders can get a visa on arrival in Cambodia. The process is straightforward at all major airports and land borders. You don't need to apply before you travel — just bring your passport and cash.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Apply at www.evisa.gov.kh for $30 USD. Processing takes 3 working days. You get a PDF — print two copies, one for immigration and one for the airline at check-in.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Show proof of departure
Immigration officers at Phnom Penh and Siem Reap airports routinely ask for a flight out of Cambodia. Have a printed itinerary or your phone ready. A bus ticket to a neighbouring country also works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host address
Officers sometimes ask where you are staying. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. A booking on your phone is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or card for your stay
Carry at least $300 USD in cash or have a card with a visible balance. ATMs are common in cities but charge fees. Immigration rarely checks this, but it helps if asked.Recommended
Cash only – ATMs come after immigration
There are no ATMs or currency exchange counters before the visa-on-arrival counters in Cambodian airports. You must have USD cash in hand. If you forgot, you can ask another passenger to exchange, but it's risky. Bring enough USD for the visa fee and some extra for a SIM card or taxi.
Photo cost varies by airport
Phnom Penh airport has a photo booth right before the visa counter – costs about $2 USD. Siem Reap airport sometimes has a staff member who takes photos for $1. But these booths can be slow. Much better to bring your own photo.
Visa on arrival valid for 30 days – extend once
If you want to stay longer than 30 days, get the visa on arrival, then extend it for another 30 days at the Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh (near the airport) or through any travel agency. Cost ~$45–$60 USD. Don't overstay – the fine adds up fast.

What happens at the border

1
Get off the plane and follow signs
At Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, or Sihanoukville airports, follow the 'Visa on Arrival' signs. You'll pass a counter with visa application forms on the wall.
2
Fill out the forms
Take a visa application form and an arrival/departure card. Use a black or blue pen. Write clearly. You'll need your passport number, flight number, and hotel address.
3
Hand in documents at the visa counter
Approach the visa desk. Give the officer your passport, completed forms, one photo (if you have it), and USD cash. They'll process your visa and tell you to wait.
4
Wait and collect your passport
Wait in the seating area near the counter. Usually takes 5–15 minutes. They'll call your name or hold up your passport. Check the visa sticker — expiry date and entry stamp.
5
Proceed to immigration
Take your passport with the visa sticker and the arrival card to the immigration officer. They'll stamp you in. Collect your luggage, then go through customs (green channel for nothing to declare).

Frequently asked questions

The standard tourist visa on arrival gives you 30 days. Business visa also 30 days. You can extend the tourist visa once for an additional 30 days at the Immigration Department in Phnom Penh (or via a travel agent). Cost is around $45–$60 USD.
Yes, at most international land crossings, e.g., Poipet (from Thailand), Bavet (from Vietnam), and Cham Yeam (from Thailand). The process is the same – cash, photo, forms. But some smaller border posts may not offer VOA – check ahead.
Yes, but they'll charge a 'photo fee' typically $1–$2 USD or send you to a nearby booth. This adds time. Better to bring your own.
No. Only cash – US dollars. No cards, no other currencies (except occasionally Thai baht at some land borders, but not guaranteed). Always bring crisp USD.
Overstay fine is $5 USD per day at the airport immigration office before departure. Pay in cash. Overstays can affect future entries – best to extend or leave on time.
The e-visa (available from the official Cambodian e-visa website) costs around $36 USD and takes 3 business days to process. It lets you skip the visa-on-arrival line at major airports and a few land borders. But you still need to queue at immigration. For most UK travellers, VOA is perfectly fine and faster if you have the right documents.
Officially, Cambodia may ask for proof of onward travel (return or onward ticket) and proof of funds. In practice, they rarely check for UK passport holders on arrival. But your airline might require a return ticket before boarding – check with them.
