Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your full stay
At least 6 months validity beyond your entry date. Minimum 1 blank page for the entry stamp. Airlines may deny boarding if validity is too close.Required
Return or onward ticket
Officers check this regularly
A confirmed flight out of the country. Immigration may ask to see this — have a screenshot ready on your phone. An onward ticket from a neighbouring country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel name or address
A hotel booking confirmation, or the address of where you are staying. The arrival form often asks for this. A Booking.com or Airbnb confirmation email is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Rarely checked
Immigration officers may ask you to demonstrate sufficient funds for your stay. A credit card or bank statement usually suffices.Recommended
Apply well in advance
Visa appointments fill up quickly, especially for summer travel (June-August) and December. Book your slot 2-3 months ahead. Processing can take 3-4 weeks, so don't wait until the last minute.
Travel insurance is mandatory – do not skip it
You won't get the visa without valid travel medical insurance covering €30,000 minimum, valid across the Schengen Area for the entire trip. Buy it from a reputable insurer (e.g., ICICI Lombard, HDFC Ergo) and ensure the policy explicitly covers Schengen visa requirements.
Biometrics valid for 5 years
If you've applied for a Schengen visa in the last 5 years and your fingerprints are in the VIS (Visa Information System), you may not need to give them again. Check with VFS – it could save you a trip to the centre.

What happens at the border

1
Determine where to apply
Find the Icelandic visa application centre or embassy responsible for your region. Iceland is represented by VFS Global in India (New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru). You apply for a Schengen visa – Iceland may outsource to Denmark or Norway if no local office. Check VFS Iceland website.
2
Prepare your documents
Gather all required documents: valid passport with 6 months validity and blank page, application form, photos, flight and hotel bookings, travel insurance, bank statements, cover letter, employment proof. Make copies of everything. Ensure documents are in English or have certified translations.
3
Book an appointment
Schedule a visa appointment via the VFS Global website (create an account). Slots can fill up weeks in advance, especially during peak travel seasons (summer, Christmas). Book 2-3 months ahead.
4
Attend the appointment in person
Arrive 15 minutes early at the visa centre. Do not bring large bags or electronics. Submit your documents, pay the visa fee, and give biometrics (fingerprints and photograph – valid for 5 years). Some applicants may be called for a brief interview.
5
Wait for processing
Standard processing time is 15 calendar days, but can extend to 30-45 days if more checks are needed. Track your application using the reference number on the VFS tracking service.
6
Collect your passport
Once a decision is made, you'll receive an SMS/email. Collect your passport from the visa centre or have it couriered to you. If approved, check the visa sticker for validity dates, number of entries, and any errors.

You will receive a written explanation for the rejection. You can appeal within 30 days to the embassy that made the decision. Alternatively, you can reapply with additional or corrected documents. Common reasons: insufficient funds, weak travel history, missing documents.
Yes. You must provide fingerprints and a digital photograph at the visa application centre. Biometrics are valid for 5 years. If you've had Schengen visas in the past 5 years with biometrics, you may be able to submit by courier (if permitted).
