Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Norway. You must apply at a Norwegian embassy or consulate before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa option. Plan ahead: processing can take 2–4 weeks, especially during peak summer travel season.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Schengen visa application
Apply before travel
You need a Schengen visa to enter Norway. Apply at the Norwegian embassy or visa application center in your home country — processing takes at least 15 calendar days. Start the process at least 4 weeks before your trip.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area. Carry a copy of the bio page separately in your luggage.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit from Schengen
Immigration officers at Oslo Gardermoen check for a return or onward ticket out of the Schengen zone. A flight to London, Dubai, or any non-Schengen destination works — just show you're leaving within your visa's validity.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have your hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Border officers ask for this frequently — a printed copy or a screenshot on your phone works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Carry bank statements or a credit card showing at least €50 per day of your stay. Norway is expensive — officers want to see you can pay for accommodation, food, and transport without working.Recommended
Visa appointment slots fill fast
During summer (May–August), VFS centres in India often have no appointments for 3–4 weeks. Book your slot as soon as you have your travel dates confirmed. Check the VFS website daily for cancellations.
Norway is not in the EU — but it is in Schengen
A Norway visa lets you travel to all 27 Schengen countries (France, Germany, Italy, etc.) for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. But Norway uses the Norwegian Krone (NOK), not the Euro. Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere.

What happens at the border

1
Gather your documents
Collect all the required documents listed above. Make sure your passport has 6+ months validity and a blank page. Print your online application form and sign it.
2
Book a visa appointment
Schedule an appointment at the Norwegian embassy in New Delhi or at a VFS Global centre in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, or Bengaluru. Appointments can fill up 2–3 weeks in advance, especially in summer.
3
Submit your application in person
Go to your appointment with all original documents plus photocopies. You'll submit your biometrics (fingerprints and photo). The visa officer may ask a few questions about your trip.
4
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days, but can extend to 30–45 days if additional checks are needed. You can track your application online with the reference number from VFS.
5
Collect your passport
Once a decision is made, you'll get an email to collect your passport from the VFS centre or have it couriered to you. If approved, the visa sticker will be inside.
6
Arrive in Norway
At Oslo Gardermoen Airport (or any Schengen entry point), join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance ready. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and how long you're staying.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing is 15 calendar days from the date you submit your application. During peak season (May–August), it can take 30 days or more. Apply at least 6 weeks before your planned departure.
You fill out the application form online at the UDI website, but you must submit it in person at the Norwegian embassy in New Delhi or at a VFS Global centre. There is no fully online visa process.
You need to show at least €50–€100 per day of your stay. For a 10-day trip, that's €500–€1,000 (approx. INR 45,000–90,000). If your accommodation is prepaid, the lower end is usually fine. Submit 3 months of bank statements.
Yes, it's mandatory for the Schengen visa. Your policy must cover medical emergencies and repatriation up to €30,000, and be valid across all Schengen countries. You'll need to submit the certificate with your application.
Yes, but only if Norway is your main destination (longest stay) or your first point of entry. If you're spending more days in France, for example, you should apply for a French visa instead.
You can appeal the decision within 3 weeks. Write a letter explaining why you think the rejection was wrong, and submit it to the embassy or VFS. The appeal is free, but there's no guarantee of reversal. Common reasons for rejection: insufficient funds, weak travel history, or incomplete documents.
No. There is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa for Indian citizens. You must obtain a Schengen visa before you travel. Arriving without one will result in being denied entry and sent back on the next flight.
