Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival at Egyptian airports
Get a single-entry 30-day visa on arrival at Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, or Luxor airports. Pay $25 USD in cash (exact change preferred) at the bank kiosk before immigration. The visa sticker goes into your passport — keep the tear-off slip with your departure card.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Egypt enforces the 6-month passport validity rule strictly — airlines check this at check-in. If your passport expires within 6 months of your arrival date, you will be denied boarding. No exceptions for Japanese passport holders.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa-on-arrival entry
Immigration officers at Cairo Airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward flight booking ready. Airlines also check this before issuing your boarding pass.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask for your hotel reservation or host's address in Egypt. Have a printed booking confirmation or a digital copy on your phone. If staying with friends, carry their contact details and address in Arabic if possible.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or card showing sufficient funds
Officers rarely ask for proof of funds for Japanese passport holders, but carry at least $1,000 USD equivalent in cash or have a credit card with a visible limit. ATMs are widely available in cities but not at the airport arrival hall.Recommended
Bring exact USD 25 cash — no exceptions
The bank kiosk only accepts US dollars cash (clean, not torn). No credit cards, no euros, no Egyptian pounds. ATMs are unreliable. If you don't have the exact amount, you may be turned away.
Visa on arrival is single entry only
If you leave Egypt (even for a day trip to Jordan or Israel), you'll need to pay for a new visa on return. Plan your itinerary accordingly.

What happens at the border

1
Get off the plane and follow signs to 'Bank'
At Cairo International Airport (CAI), after passport control but before immigration, you'll see a bank kiosk. Join the queue, hand over USD 25 cash, and they'll give you a visa sticker. Do not go to the immigration queue first.
2
Affix the sticker and proceed to immigration
Take the sticker to the immigration officer. They'll stamp it and your passport. Keep the receipt — you may need it when leaving.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items.
