Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay in Iceland
Your Japanese passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Iceland. Airlines may ask for 6 months validity beyond your departure date, but Iceland only requires validity for the stay itself.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Iceland immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket out of the Schengen zone. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they check this at passport control.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a host's invitation letter handy. Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a recent bank statement or enough cash/cards to cover your stay. Iceland is expensive — having access to at least 10,000 ISK per day (roughly $70 USD) shows you can support yourself.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Iceland is part of the Schengen zone. Your 90-day visa-free stay counts against the same 90-day limit for all Schengen countries (e.g., France, Germany, Italy). If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries in the past 180 days, that time counts toward your 90-day limit in Iceland.
No arrival declaration needed
Unlike some countries, Iceland does not require you to fill out an arrival form or pre-register online. Just show your passport and you're in.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Keflavík Airport
You'll land at Keflavík International Airport (KEF), about 50 km from Reykjavík. Follow signs to 'Passport Control' — it's a single queue for all non-Schengen arrivals.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your Japanese passport. The officer will check your photo, validity, and may ask your purpose of visit (tourism is fine). They'll stamp your passport with the entry date.
3
Answer any questions
Common questions: 'How long are you staying?' 'Where are you staying?' 'Do you have a return ticket?' Answer honestly and briefly. Have your accommodation and return ticket info ready on your phone.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, grab your bags from the carousel and walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no goods to declare. That's it — you're in Iceland.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. You cannot work for an Icelandic company or do paid work while there. Remote work for a non-Icelandic employer is a grey area — technically not allowed under the visa-free rules, but enforcement is rare. If you want to stay longer and work remotely, look into Iceland's long-term visa for remote workers.
No. The visa-free period is fixed at 90 days within any 180-day period in the Schengen area. You cannot extend it from within Iceland. If you overstay, you risk fines, deportation, and a ban from the Schengen zone. Plan your trip to fit within 90 days.
You need a visa or residence permit. For tourism, you can't stay longer than 90 days. For study, work, or family reasons, apply for the appropriate permit at the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration before you travel. Processing times vary — start at least 3 months early.
No. For stays under 90 days, there's no registration requirement. Just enter, enjoy your trip, and leave before your 90 days are up.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You could be fined, deported, and banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years. Don't risk it — set a calendar reminder to leave on time.
Technically, you might be allowed if your passport is still valid for your entire stay, but airlines and border officers often enforce the 6-month rule strictly. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel to avoid being denied boarding.
No. If you're transiting through Keflavík Airport and staying airside (not passing through passport control), you don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport or have a layover longer than a few hours, you'll need to clear immigration — and the 90-day visa-free rule applies.
