Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Sweden
Your passport needs to be valid for the whole time you're in Sweden. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Swedish law, but some airlines may ask for 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Arlanda and other Swedish airports routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — budget airlines sometimes check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a return ticket. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a friend/host with their address is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Sweden doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but having around 450 SEK per day (about €40) in cash, card, or bank statement covers you. I've never been asked, but a few travellers report being checked at land borders.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 rule applies
Your 90-day visa-free stay is shared across all Schengen countries. You cannot stay 90 days in Sweden, then move to France for another 90. The clock runs continuously. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Entry may be refused without proof of onward travel
Even though you don't need a visa, Swedish border officers can deny entry if you can't show a return ticket or proof of accommodation. Always have these ready on your phone or printed.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you fly, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, first-night accommodation confirmation, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone.
2
Arrive at Swedish border control
At Arlanda (Stockholm), Landvetter (Gothenburg), or any other Swedish airport, join the 'Non-EU' queue. Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This starts your 90-day Schengen clock. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when leaving.
4
Exit Schengen area
Before day 90, leave Sweden or any Schengen country. Overstaying can result in fines or a re-entry ban. Your exit stamp will close the visit.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen Area and cannot be extended for tourism. If you need to stay longer (e.g., for work or study), you must apply for a national visa or residence permit before you travel.
No. The 90-day limit is calculated over any 180-day period. Leaving to a non-Schengen country like the UK does not reset the clock. You must wait until you've been outside Schengen for 90 days before re-entering.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, detained, or banned from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 5 years. Always leave before day 90.
No. For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer than 90 days (with a visa or permit), you must register with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) within a few weeks.
Technically, the visa-free stay is for tourism and business (meetings, conferences). Remote work for a non-Swedish employer is usually tolerated, but it's a grey area. If you plan to work for a Swedish company, you need a work permit.
Report it immediately to the local police (Polisen) and then contact the Japanese Embassy in Stockholm. They can issue an emergency travel document. Keep a photocopy or digital scan of your passport separately.
No. Sweden follows the common Schengen visa policy. A visa-free stay for Japanese citizens covers all 27 Schengen countries. There is no separate 'Sweden-only' visa for short visits.
