Singapore passport holders need a visa to enter New Zealand in 2026. You must apply for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before you travel — it's quick and done entirely online. Plan ahead: approval can take up to 72 hours, so don't leave it until the airport.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
NZeTA applicationNZeTA: New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority — required for visa-exempt visitors. Apply at immigration.govt.nz or via the NZeTA app ($17 NZD). Takes minutes to approve.
Electronic Travel Authority
Apply for your NZeTA before departure at immigration.govt.nz or via the NZeTA app. The fee is $17 NZD via the app or $23 NZD via the website, plus the $35 NZD International Visitor Levy. Approval usually takes minutes, but apply at least 72 hours before your flight.Apply for NZeTARequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your Singapore passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in New Zealand. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by New Zealand immigration, but airlines may enforce 6 months validity — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing your departure from New Zealand within your visa-free period.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter from your host. Immigration may ask for it at the border, especially if you're arriving without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Have bank statements, credit card statements, or cash equivalent to at least NZD 1,000 per month of stay. Immigration officers rarely ask, but they can request proof if you look underfunded.Recommended
Apply for NZeTA at least 72 hours before departure
Approval is not instant. If you apply too late, you risk being denied boarding. The NZeTA is valid for 2 years, so you can apply well in advance.
Biosecurity is strict — declare everything
New Zealand has some of the world's strictest biosecurity laws. Declare any food, plants, animal products, or outdoor gear. If you're unsure, declare it. Fines for undeclared items start at NZD 400 and can go much higher.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for NZeTA online
Go to the Immigration New Zealand website or download the NZeTA mobile app. Fill in your passport details, travel plans, and answer a few health and character questions. Pay the fee (around NZD 9–12) plus the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD 35. Approval usually comes within 72 hours, but can be faster.
2
Pack your documents
Before you leave, save digital copies of your NZeTA approval email, passport bio page, return ticket, and first night's accommodation confirmation on your phone. Print nothing unless you prefer paper.
3
Arrive at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, or Queenstown
At the airport, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and join the queue for 'eGate' if available (Singapore passports are eligible). eGate scans your passport and takes your photo — no form needed. If eGate is not available, join the standard queue. An officer will ask your purpose of visit and may ask to see your return ticket or accommodation. Answer honestly and briefly.
4
Clear biosecurity
New Zealand has strict biosecurity. Declare any food, plants, animal products, or outdoor gear. If you're unsure, declare it — fines are steep. Bins are available before the inspection point to dispose of prohibited items.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. You need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before you travel. It's not a visa sticker — it's an electronic travel authorisation linked to your passport. Apply online at immigration.govt.nz. The fee is about NZD 9–12 plus the IVL of NZD 35. Approval usually takes up to 72 hours.
Up to 3 months per visit. You cannot work on an NZeTA. If you want to stay longer, you'll need to apply for a different visa before your current one expires.
No. The NZeTA is not extendable. If you need more time, you must apply for a visitor visa extension before your NZeTA expires. That requires a separate application and fee.
You will be denied entry and sent back on the next available flight. Airlines check for NZeTA approval before boarding, so you won't even get on the plane. Apply at least 72 hours before departure.
Yes. Immigration may ask to see proof of onward travel. A booked flight out of New Zealand is required. A screenshot or email confirmation on your phone is fine.
No, but it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in New Zealand are high — a hospital stay can cost hundreds of NZD per day. Most travel insurance policies cover medical emergencies and trip cancellations.
Yes. Singapore passports are eligible for eGate at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown airports. eGate scans your passport and takes your photo — no form needed. If eGate is unavailable, join the standard queue.
