Good news for US citizens: you can get a visa on arrival in Jordan — no advance application needed. As of 2026, you’ll receive a single-entry tourist visa at major airports and land borders, valid for up to 30 days. Just ensure your passport has at least 6 months of remaining validity and one blank page.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity remaining from your entry date into Jordan. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Queen Alia International Airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready — they will deny entry without one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel reservation for your entire stay. If staying with friends or family, have their contact details and address written down — officers sometimes ask for this at the visa-on-arrival counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or card for your stay
Officers may ask how you plan to support yourself. Have at least $500 USD in cash or a credit card with available limit — they rarely check, but it helps if questioned.Recommended
Jordan Pass = visa fee waived
Buy the Jordan Pass online before you travel. If you stay at least 3 consecutive nights in Jordan, the 40 JOD visa fee is waived. You still get the visa on arrival (just show the pass), and you get free entry to most major attractions. It can save you money and time.
Crossing from the West Bank via King Hussein Bridge
If you enter Jordan from the West Bank at the King Hussein Bridge (Allenby), expect long queues and less predictable processing. The crossing is often crowded, and you may be asked to show proof of departure from Jordan. Bring extra patience and ensure your Jordan Pass or visa fee cash is readily accessible. Also note that the crossing closes around midday Friday and Saturday — plan accordingly.
Cash is king — bring JOD or USD
The visa on arrival is cash-only. You can pay in Jordanian Dinars (preferred) or US dollars, but change may be given in JOD at a poor exchange rate. ATMs are available in the arrivals hall, but they are after immigration — you need cash before that. Best to bring 50 JOD in small bills from home or exchange at your departure airport.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the visa on arrival counter
After landing at Queen Alia International Airport (AMM), follow signs for 'Visa on Arrival' before the passport control booths. The counters are well marked. If entering by land at the King Hussein Bridge (Allenby) or Sheikh Hussein Bridge, look for the visa payment window.
2
Pay the visa fee
Hand over your passport and 40 JOD in cash. The officer will issue a receipt and stamp your passport with a single-entry visa. Payment is cash only — no credit cards. Change is available but bring small bills.
3
Proceed to immigration
Take your passport with the visa sticker and receipt to the immigration officer. You'll be asked for your purpose of visit, hotel address, and possibly return ticket. Answer clearly. The officer may ask a few questions; answer calmly. You'll get an entry stamp and your passport back.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, go to baggage claim, then pass through customs (usually a green channel for tourists). You're now free to enter Jordan.

Frequently asked questions

The standard tourist visa on arrival is valid for a single entry of up to 30 days. For longer stays, apply for an extension at the Jordanian Passport Office (Directorate of Civil Status and Passports) in Amman before your 30 days expire. Extensions are usually granted for additional 1–3 months at a cost of about 20 JOD per month. Overstaying without an extension incurs fines of around 1.5 JOD per day.
Yes, at all major entry points: Queen Alia International Airport, King Hussein Bridge (Allenby) from the West Bank, Sheikh Hussein Bridge from Israel, and the Aqaba and Mudawwara land borders with Saudi Arabia. The King Hussein Bridge crossing is often crowded with longer processing times. The visa fee is 40 JOD everywhere.
The Jordan Pass (purchased online before travel) covers the visa fee if you stay at least 3 consecutive nights in Jordan. It costs 70–80 JOD depending on the sites included, effectively waiving the 40 JOD visa fee. It also includes entry to most major attractions like Petra, Jerash, and Wadi Rum. If you plan to visit those, the Pass usually pays for itself. You show the pass at the visa counter instead of paying cash.
Yes, Aqaba Airport offers the same visa-on-arrival process for US citizens. Arriving by sea at the Port of Aqaba (ferry from Egypt) also allows visa on arrival at the port's immigration office. The fee is still 40 JOD. Overland from Israel via the Wadi Araba crossing (near Aqaba) also works.
Yes, you can extend your visa at the Civil Status and Passports Department in Amman or regional offices. Apply before your initial 30 days expire. Extensions are typically granted for up to 3 months, costing about 20 JOD per extra month (cash only). Overstaying fines are 1.5 JOD per day, so sort it early.
Yes, each traveler needs their own visa regardless of age. Children must have their own passport (not on a parent's) and meet the same validity requirements. The fee is 40 JOD per person; no child discount.
Jordan does not currently offer an e-Visa for US citizens. The only online option is the Jordan Pass, which bundles the visa fee with sightseeing. Ignore third-party websites claiming to sell e-Visas — they are not official and may be scams.
