Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Turkey. Turkey does not enforce a 6-month validity rule for US passport holders — just make sure it doesn't expire before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Immigration may ask
Turkish immigration officers occasionally ask for proof of onward travel at passport control. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Immigration rarely checks this for US passport holders, but having it avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Have a recent bank statement or enough cash/card available to show you can support yourself. Turkey does not publish a fixed minimum amount, but $50–$100 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly checked
Turkish immigration will check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your departure date. If it is close, renew before traveling. Do not risk being denied boarding or entry.
No e-Visa needed, but be aware of the 90/180 rule
You do not need any visa, but the 90-day limit is per rolling 180-day period. If you have recently visited Turkey, count your days carefully. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Turkish Airport or Border
At any Turkish airport or land border, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' passport control. Queues can be long at major airports like IST or SAW. Have your passport and travel documents (return ticket, accommodation) ready, either printed or on your phone.
2
Present Your Passport to the Officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask a few questions: purpose of visit, where you're staying, how long you plan to stay. Answer clearly and politely. They will stamp your passport and grant a stay of up to 90 days, as indicated by the stamp.
3
Collect Your Baggage and Proceed to Customs
After passport control, collect your luggage from the carousel. Customs uses a green/red channel system. Unless you have something to declare, walk through the green channel. No customs form is normally required.
4
Exit the Airport
Once past customs, you are free to enter Turkey. Keep your passport and any entry stamps safe — you will need them when leaving.

Frequently asked questions

No. Turkish immigration requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from the day you leave Turkey. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied entry. Renew your passport before you go.
US citizens can stay up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. This means you count back 180 days from each day of stay. If you have already spent 90 days in Turkey in the past 180 days, you cannot enter. Plan your trips accordingly.
No. US citizens are visa-free for tourism and business stays up to 90 days. You do not need to apply for an e-Visa. Just show up at the border with a valid passport.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, banned from re-entering Turkey, or both. The fine is roughly 500 TRY per day (subject to change), and you must pay it at the airport before departure. Avoid overstaying.
Not for tourism. The 90-day visa-free period cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit (ikamet) at the local PDMM office before your 90 days expire. This is a separate process and requires a reason like study or work.
Officially no, but immigration officers often ask for proof of onward travel. It is best to have a printed or digital copy of your return flight booking. If you do not have one, you may face extra questioning or even denial.
No, it is not required for visa-free entry. However, it is strongly recommended. Medical costs in Turkey can be expensive for uninsured travelers. Some hospitals may ask for a deposit before treatment.
