Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get a 15-day visa on arrival at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport. Pay $25 USD in cash (exact change helps) and fill out the arrival form before the queue. Have two passport-size photos ready — the photo booth at the airport charges triple.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date in Nepal. Airlines check this at check-in — they will deny boarding if your passport expires sooner.Required
Return or onward ticket
Return ticket
Immigration at Kathmandu airport asks for a confirmed onward ticket out of Nepal. A flight to Delhi, Bangkok, or anywhere works — just show the booking. Budget airlines flying into Nepal check this before letting you board.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking
Have your first night's hotel confirmation ready — either printed or on your phone. Immigration rarely asks, but if they do, a booking.com reservation works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Financial proof
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or show a bank statement. Nepal is a cash-heavy country — ATMs exist but charge high fees, and many trekking areas have no machines at all.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date you arrive. Nepali immigration checks this carefully. If your passport expires sooner, you will be refused entry — no exceptions. Renew before you go.
Bring exact change in USD
The visa counter does not give change. If you hand over a $100 bill for a $30 visa, they will keep the entire $100 as the fee. Have the exact amount in small denomination bills ($1, $5, $10, $20). No coins or torn/scribbled notes — they will be rejected.
Visa on arrival is straightforward
You do not need to apply online or visit an embassy. Show up with the correct documents, pay, and you receive your visa. Thousands of German travelers use this process annually without issues.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the arrival card and visa form
On the plane or at the airport, you will receive a small white arrival card and a larger visa application form. Fill in your passport details, flight information, and address in Nepal. Keep them ready.
2
Go to the 'Visa on Arrival' counter
After disembarking, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' before the main immigration counters at Tribhuvan Airport. There are separate windows for different nationalities. German citizens queue at the general counter.
3
Submit documents and pay
Hand over your passport, completed forms, two photos, and the exact fee in USD. The officer will process and give you a receipt. Choose your duration: 15 days ($30), 30 days ($50), or 90 days ($125).
4
Receive your visa sticker and go to immigration
Once processed, you will get your passport back with a visa sticker. Then proceed to the immigration counters for entry stamping. Your visa effective date starts from today — not from when you enter.

Frequently asked questions

Yes — the same visa on arrival is available at major land crossings: Kakarbhitta (from India), Birgunj, Belahia, Nepalgunj, and Mahendranagar. The process is similar but can be slower. Bring USD cash and photos. Smaller border posts may not offer visa on arrival — check in advance.
No — the visa counter only accepts US dollars in cash. They do not accept cards, euros, or other currencies. ATMs are after immigration, not before. You can exchange euros or other currency at airport bank counters before immigration, but their hours are limited. Bring USD.
You can choose 15, 30, or 90 days at the counter. The 15- and 30-day visas are single entry; the 90-day visa is multiple entry. For longer stays, you can extend up to a total of 150 days per calendar year. Extensions are done at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or Pokhara for about $30–$60 per 15 or 30 days.
No — Nepal immigration does not require proof of onward travel for visa on arrival. However, your airline may ask for it before boarding. Some airlines are strict; others are not. Carry a refundable onward ticket to be safe.
At Tribhuvan Airport, it usually takes 20–40 minutes, depending on the queue. During peak hours (morning arrivals from Southeast Asia), it can take up to an hour. Land border crossings are faster but can be disorganized. Processing time includes filling forms, queuing, and payment.
Yes — but only at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu (near the UN building) or at the Immigration Office in Pokhara. You can extend for 15 or 30 days at a time, up to a maximum total stay of 150 days per calendar year. Cost is about $30 for 15 days, $60 for 30 days. You need a passport photo and your original visa.
Yes — all German passport holders (including children) can get a visa on arrival. Minors need their own passport and a parent or guardian to complete the form. No prior approval or pre-registration is required.
