What happens at the border

1
Determine where to apply
Find the Hungarian visa application centre (VFS Global) or Embassy that covers your area. You must apply in your home country — Indian nationals should apply in India unless residing elsewhere. Check the embassy website for jurisdiction.
2
Gather your documents
Collect all required documents: passport, photos, visa application form, travel insurance, flight itinerary, hotel bookings, bank statements, employment letter or leave approval, and a copy of your passport data page.
3
Book an appointment
Visa slots can fill up weeks in advance. Go to the VFS Global website, register, and schedule a date. Walk-ins are not accepted. Appointments are free, but you'll pay the visa fee later.
4
Attend the appointment
Arrive on time at the centre. Submit your documents, pay the visa fee (around 80 euros for adults, 40 euros for children), and provide biometrics (fingerprints and a digital photo). The officer may ask a few basic questions about your trip.
5
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days, but can extend to 45 days in busy periods. You'll receive a notification when your passport is ready for collection or can be couriered back.
6
Collect your visa & travel
Once approved, your visa sticker will be in your passport. Check the validity dates and number of entries. Fly to Hungary within the visa window. At border control, have your passport, visa, and supporting documents ready — they may ask for proof of purpose.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing time is 15 calendar days from the date of application, but during peak season (May–September) it can take up to 45 days. Apply at least 4–6 weeks before your trip. You can track your application online if you opted for SMS updates.
Yes, if Hungary is your main destination (where you'll spend the most days) or your first point of entry. The visa allows free movement within the entire Schengen Area (27 European countries). You cannot, however, travel outside Schengen (e.g., to the UK or Ireland) without a separate visa.
The Schengen visa fee is 80 euros for adults and 40 euros for children aged 6–12. Children under 6 are free. These fees are set by the European Commission and are non-refundable. You'll pay in Indian rupees at the VFS centre (rate varies). There is also a VFS service fee of around 1,000–2,000 INR, plus optional courier charges.
Most applicants only visit the VFS Global centre for biometrics and document submission — that is not a formal interview. However, consular officers may call you for a personal interview at the Embassy if they need additional clarification. This is rare but possible.
No. The Hungarian authorities strictly require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area. You must renew your passport first. Some other Schengen countries accept 3 months, but Hungary enforces 6 months.
Yes, if you hold a valid residence permit issued by any Schengen state, you can enter Hungary for short stays without an additional visa. The permit must be valid for the entire duration of your visit. Carry both your passport and the residence card.
You'll receive a formal refusal letter stating the reason. Common reasons include insufficient funds, weak travel history, or incomplete documents. You can appeal within 30 days to the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi. The appeal fee is around 60 euros. Alternatively, you can reapply after addressing the issue.
