Indian passport holders need a visa to enter the Czech Republic. You must obtain a Schengen visa from the Czech embassy or a visa application centre before traveling — this applies for tourism, business, or family visits.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your full stay
At least 6 months validity beyond your entry date. Minimum 1 blank page for the entry stamp. Airlines may deny boarding if validity is too close.Required
Return or onward ticket
Officers check this regularly
A confirmed flight out of the country. Immigration may ask to see this — have a screenshot ready on your phone. An onward ticket from a neighbouring country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel name or address
A hotel booking confirmation, or the address of where you are staying. The arrival form often asks for this. A Booking.com or Airbnb confirmation email is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Rarely checked
Immigration officers may ask you to demonstrate sufficient funds for your stay. A credit card or bank statement usually suffices.Recommended
Visa processing times are unpredictable
While standard processing is 15 days, some applications are delayed due to additional verification. Don't book non-refundable flights or hotels until you have the visa in hand. Consider using refundable bookings or waiting for approval.
Schengen visa allows travel within entire Schengen zone
With a Czech-issued Schengen visa you can visit 29 countries including Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, and Italy without additional visas. But your main destination must be the Czech Republic — don't use it just to enter another Schengen country.
No visa extensions for short-stay visits
The Czech Republic does not allow extending a short-stay Schengen visa for tourism, business, or family visits. If you need to stay longer than 90 days in any 180-day period, you must apply for a long-stay visa or residence permit before traveling.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather all required documents: passport, photos, insurance, flight and hotel bookings, bank statements, visa application form, and cover letter. Make copies of everything — the application centre may keep some.
2
Schedule an appointment at the Czech Visa Application Centre
Book a slot at the VFS Global centre handling Czech Republic visas in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, or Chandigarh. Walk-ins are usually not accepted — book online at least 2–3 weeks in advance during peak season.
3
Attend the appointment and submit biometrics
Arrive 15 minutes early. You'll submit your documents, pay the visa fee (around €80 + service charge), get your fingerprints and photo taken. The officer may ask a few questions about your trip.
4
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days from the appointment date. It can be extended to 30 or even 60 days in rare cases. Track your application online using the receipt number.
5
Collect your passport
Once a decision is made, you'll receive a notification (email/SMS). Collect your passport from the same VFS centre or opt for courier delivery (available in some cities). Check the visa sticker for correct dates and validity.
6
Travel and enter the Schengen area
On arrival at Prague Airport or any Schengen border, present your passport and visa. The officer may ask for return ticket, proof of funds, and accommodation — keep those handy. You'll get an entry stamp with the allowed stay duration.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing is 15 calendar days from the date you submit your application at VFS Global. But plan for at least 3–4 weeks total including appointment wait times. During peak summer (April–July) appointments can be booked out 3–4 weeks in advance, so start at least 6 weeks before your travel.
Yes — a short-stay Schengen visa issued by the Czech Republic lets you travel freely within all 29 Schengen countries (including France, Germany, Italy, Spain). But you must enter/maintain your longest stay in the Czech Republic, or if stays are equal, your first point of entry. If you're caught mainly visiting another country, you may be denied entry or flagged for visa shopping.
No. Indians must apply for a Schengen visa in advance through the Czech embassy or VFS Global. There is no e-visa or visa on arrival for Czech Republic for Indian passport holders.
As of 2024, the Schengen visa fee is €80 (about ₹7,200) for adults and €40 for children aged 6–12. Children under 6 are free. Plus VFS Global charges a service fee of about ₹1,200–₹2,000 depending on location. Fees are non-refundable if the visa is denied.
No — the visa is not extendable for tourism or business. You must leave before the visa expiry date. Overstaying even one day can lead to a ban from Schengen area. If you have a genuine emergency (medical), contact the Czech Foreign Police before your visa expires.
Technically yes — border officers may ask for proof of onward or return travel. Always carry a printed or digital copy of your return flight booking. If you're continuing to another non-Schengen country, show that ticket.
Top reasons: insufficient funds (bank balance too low or not enough for the whole trip), weak ties to India (no job, no property, no family), incomplete or inconsistent documents (e.g., hotel bookings not matching travel dates), previous overstays in Schengen, or applying to wrong country (visa shopping).
