Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa to visit Italy for tourism, business, or transit. You apply at the Italian embassy or consulate in India, usually through a VFS Global center, well before your travel. The visa allows stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your full stay
At least 6 months validity beyond your entry date. Minimum 1 blank page for the entry stamp. Airlines may deny boarding if validity is too close.Required
Return or onward ticket
Officers check this regularly
A confirmed flight out of the country. Immigration may ask to see this — have a screenshot ready on your phone. An onward ticket from a neighbouring country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel name or address
A hotel booking confirmation, or the address of where you are staying. The arrival form often asks for this. A Booking.com or Airbnb confirmation email is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Rarely checked
Immigration officers may ask you to demonstrate sufficient funds for your stay. A credit card or bank statement usually suffices.Recommended
Appointment Slots Fill Fast
VFS Global appointment slots for Italy are often booked weeks or months in advance, especially from March to August. Book your appointment as soon as you have your travel dates – even before booking non-refundable flights. Some centers may offer priority slots at extra cost.
Schengen Area – Multiple Entry
Italy is part of the Schengen Area, so your visa allows you to travel freely between all 27 Schengen countries. A multiple-entry visa (if granted) lets you enter and exit multiple times during its validity, up to 90 days per 180-day period.
Overstaying Has Serious Consequences
Overstaying your Schengen visa by even one day can result in a ban from entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years. Fines and deportation are also possible. Always leave before your visa expires, or apply for an extension only if you have a valid emergency with official proof.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare Your Documents
Gather all required paperwork: passport, visa form, photos, insurance, flight and hotel bookings, bank statements, employment letter, and any previous visas. Use the official checklist from VFS Global or the Italian consulate website.
2
Book an Appointment at VFS Global
Visit the VFS Global Italy visa application website, create an account, and select an appointment slot at your nearest center (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, etc.). Slots fill quickly, especially in summer – book at least 4–6 weeks ahead.
3
Attend the Appointment – Submit Biometrics
Arrive on time with all documents. You will submit your application, pay the fee (cash or card depending on center), and provide fingerprints and a digital photograph. Original documents will be checked and returned.
4
Wait for Visa Processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days, but can extend to 30 or even 60 days if additional checks are needed. You'll receive a notification when your passport is ready for collection or courier delivery.
5
Travel and Enter Italy
Carry printouts of your visa, passport, insurance, flight, and accommodation in your hand luggage. At Italian border control, present your passport with the visa sticker, answer questions about your stay, and be ready to show your return ticket if asked.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing is 15 calendar days, but it can take 30–45 days during peak seasons (summer, holidays). Some applications may take up to 60 days if additional verification is needed. Always apply at least 4–6 weeks before your trip.
You fill the application form online (via VFS Global’s portal) and book an appointment, but you must submit everything in person at the VFS center. Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are required every 59 months. There is no fully online visa for Indians.
Yes, if you are an Indian passport holder transiting through a Schengen airport (including Italy), you generally need a Schengen transit visa unless you hold a visa or residence permit from certain countries (US, UK, Canada, Japan, etc.). Check the specific exemption list on the Italian embassy website.
There is no fixed amount, but consulates typically expect proof of at least €50–€100 per day of your stay. For a 10-day trip, showing ₹50,000–₹1,00,000 in your bank account (after covering flights and hotels) is common. More is better if you have no sponsor. Credit card statements or traveler's cheques also help.
Extensions are rarely granted and only for exceptional circumstances (medical emergency, force majeure). You cannot simply decide to stay longer. If you need more than 90 days, you must apply for a national visa (e.g., study, work) from India before travel.
Yes. Even if not explicitly asked at the visa application, Italian border officers may request proof of a confirmed return ticket. Always carry a printed copy of your flight itinerary or booking.
You will receive a formal refusal letter stating the reason(s). You can appeal within 60 days to the Italian embassy/consulate. Alternatively, you can reapply after addressing the reasons for refusal. The visa fee is not refunded.
