Indian passport holders need a visa to travel to Spain in 2026. Spain is part of the Schengen Area, so you'll apply for a short-stay Schengen visa. Apply at least 4–6 weeks before your trip at the Spanish consulate covering your state of residence.

Must cover your full stay
At least 6 months validity beyond your entry date. Minimum 1 blank page for the entry stamp. Airlines may deny boarding if validity is too close.Required

A confirmed flight out of the country. Immigration may ask to see this — have a screenshot ready on your phone. An onward ticket from a neighbouring country also works.Recommended

Hotel name or address
A hotel booking confirmation, or the address of where you are staying. The arrival form often asks for this. A Booking.com or Airbnb confirmation email is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds

Apply early – slots fill fast
Spanish visa appointments through BLS International are notoriously in high demand, especially during April–June and September–October. Start gathering documents 3 months before your trip and book your appointment as soon as slots open. Some travellers have to wait weeks for a free slot.
Schengen Area – not just Spain
With a Spanish Schengen visa, you can also visit France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Netherlands, and 24 other countries. But your main destination must be Spain (longest stay). If you split time equally, enter through Spain.
Visas are generally issued for specific dates
Most Schengen visas are single-entry or multiple-entry and valid for the exact dates of your trip. Sometimes you'll get a 1-year multi-entry if you have a good travel history. Make sure your travel insurance covers all those dates.

What happens at the border

1
Determine which Spanish consulate to use
Spain has consulates in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Panaji, and Hyderabad. You must apply at the consulate that covers your state of residence. Check the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for jurisdiction.
2
Book an appointment online
Go to the BLS International website (Spain's visa outsourcer in India) or the consulate's e-appointment system. Slots fill up fast – book 2–3 months before your travel date. You'll need to pick a date and time. Keep checking if slots aren't immediately available.
3
Prepare your application package
Gather all required documents: filled form, photos, passport copies, flight and hotel reservations, insurance, bank statements, employment proof. Arrange them in the order specified on the checklist. Photocopy everything.
4
Attend the visa appointment
Go to the BLS centre or consulate at your appointed time. You'll submit all documents, give biometrics (fingerprints and photo), and pay the visa fee. The interview is usually brief – they may ask about your trip purpose and itinerary.
5
Pay the visa fee
The Schengen visa fee is €90 (approx ₹8,100) for adults, €45 for children 6–12, free for children under 6. BLS also charges a service fee of about ₹1,600–2,000. Pay in cash or card – check local rules.
6
Track your visa status
You'll receive a tracking number. Processing takes about 15 calendar days, but can extend to 30 days during peak season. Check online at the BLS portal.
7
Collect your passport
Once ready, you'll be notified via SMS/email. Collect your passport from the BLS centre or opt for courier delivery (extra fee). Check the visa sticker details immediately.
8
Travel to Spain
At Indian emigration, show your passport and visa. At Spanish border control (Madrid, Barcelona, etc.), present your passport and sometimes return ticket or hotel proof. They may ask about your stay. Schengen rules apply – you can enter Spain and move freely within the Schengen Area.

Frequently asked questions

A Schengen visa allows a maximum stay of 90 days within any 180-day period. You can travel across the entire Schengen Area (29 countries) for tourism, business, or family visits. Overstaying can result in bans.
The visa fee is €90 (approx ₹8,100) for adults, €45 for children 6–12, free for children under 6. BLS International charges an additional service fee of roughly ₹1,600–2,000. You can pay by cash, debit/credit card, or demand draft – check the BLS centre's accepted modes.
Official processing time is 15 calendar days from the date of submission. In practice, it can take 2–3 weeks. Peak seasons (summer holidays) can stretch to 30 days. Apply at least 4–6 weeks before your travel date.
Yes – if you already hold a valid multi-entry Schengen visa (from any Schengen state), you can use it to enter Spain as long as it's still valid and has sufficient days left. You don't need a separate Spanish visa.
Yes, you need to submit a flight itinerary showing your entry and exit from the Schengen Area. This doesn't have to be a paid ticket – a reservation from a travel agency or airline hold is sufficient. At the border, officers may ask to see a confirmed return ticket, so it's wise to have one or a flexible ticket.
For work, you need a national work permit visa, not a Schengen tourist visa. For study, you need a student visa (national visa). Apply at the Spanish consulate with the relevant documentation (job contract, offer letter, proof of enrollment, etc.). The application process is different and may take longer.
Rarely. Extensions are only granted in exceptional cases (force majeure, humanitarian reasons) and you must apply before your visa expires. For more than 90 days, you need a long-stay visa from India.
