Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your full stay
At least 6 months validity beyond your entry date. Minimum 1 blank page for the entry stamp. Airlines may deny boarding if validity is too close.Required
Return or onward ticket
Officers check this regularly
A confirmed flight out of the country. Immigration may ask to see this — have a screenshot ready on your phone. An onward ticket from a neighbouring country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel name or address
A hotel booking confirmation, or the address of where you are staying. The arrival form often asks for this. A Booking.com or Airbnb confirmation email is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Rarely checked
Immigration officers may ask you to demonstrate sufficient funds for your stay. A credit card or bank statement usually suffices.Recommended
Apply well in advance
Visa appointments fill up quickly, especially from March to September. Book your slot at least 4–6 weeks before your intended travel date. Processing can take 15–45 days.
Biometrics required
You must provide fingerprints and a photograph at the visa center. These are valid for 59 months. If you’ve given biometrics for a Schengen visa in the last 5 years, you may be able to skip the appointment and apply by courier (check the visa center’s rules).
Nonrefundable fees
The visa fee and service charge are not refundable if your visa is rejected or if you withdraw your application. Ensure all documents are correct and complete before submitting.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Collect all required documents: passport, photos, insurance, flight and hotel bookings, bank statements. Make photocopies of everything.
2
Book an appointment
Visit the website of the Portuguese visa application center (VFS Global or BLS International, depending on your location) to schedule an appointment. Slots fill up fast, especially in summer — book at least 3–4 weeks ahead.
3
Attend the appointment
Go to the visa center in your designated region (e.g., New Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, etc.) with all original documents and photocopies. Submit your form, pay the fee (around €80), and provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo).
4
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days, but can extend to 30–45 days during peak periods. Do not book nonrefundable flights or hotels until you get the visa.
5
Collect your passport
Once you receive an SMS/email, return to the visa center to pick up your passport, or opt for courier delivery. Check the visa vignette carefully for correct dates and duration.
