Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your full stay
At least 6 months validity beyond your entry date. Minimum 1 blank page for the entry stamp. Airlines may deny boarding if validity is too close.Required
Return or onward ticket
Officers check this regularly
A confirmed flight out of the country. Immigration may ask to see this — have a screenshot ready on your phone. An onward ticket from a neighbouring country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel name or address
A hotel booking confirmation, or the address of where you are staying. The arrival form often asks for this. A Booking.com or Airbnb confirmation email is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Rarely checked
Immigration officers may ask you to demonstrate sufficient funds for your stay. A credit card or bank statement usually suffices.Recommended
Overstaying is serious
Hong Kong strictly enforces the 30-day limit. Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine, detention, and a multi-year re-entry ban. Set a reminder to leave on time.
No arrival card needed
Since 2023, Hong Kong no longer requires visitors to fill out paper arrival cards. Just walk up to the immigration counter with your passport.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)
Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for Hong Kong residents and visitors. Join the 'Visitors' queue.
2
Present your passport and boarding pass
Hand over your passport and the boarding pass from your inbound flight. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (usually 30 days). That's it — you're in.
4
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to the baggage claim carousels, then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no dutiable goods.
