Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your date of entry into Mauritius. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mauritius
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward flight ticket at passport control. Have a printed or digital copy of your booking ready — they check dates match your visa-free stay limit.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel reservation confirmation or a letter from your host in Mauritius. Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have access to at least 3,000 Mauritian rupees (about $65 USD) per day of your stay. A bank statement or credit card showing available funds works fine — officers rarely ask but it's good to have.Recommended
No visa needed, but have your documents ready
Mauritius immigration is generally smooth, but they do check for return tickets and accommodation. Have digital copies on your phone or printed copies in your bag.
Overstaying is costly
The 90-day stay is strict. Overstaying even by a day results in a fine of MUR 500 per day. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for foreign passport holders. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready.
2
Present documents at immigration counter
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and typically ask how long you're staying. Answer clearly.
3
Collect baggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items. If you have goods over MUR 25,000 (about AED 2,000), use the red channel.
