UAE passport holders need a visa to enter Turkmenistan. You'll need to arrange this in advance through an embassy or consulate — there's no visa-on-arrival and no eVisa option for Emirati citizens. Plan ahead, as the process involves paperwork and can take a couple of weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Turkmenistan visaYou cannot get a visa on arrival or online; start the embassy application process well in advance.
Apply at an embassy/consulate
A visa is required for UAE passport holders. There is no eVisa available for your nationality. You must apply for a visa at a Turkmen embassy or consulate before travel, and you will need a letter of invitation (LOI) approved by the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan.Required
Letter of invitation (LOI)Without an approved LOI, your visa application will be rejected.
Approved by Turkmen authorities
Your visa application must be supported by a letter of invitation approved by the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan. The inviting party in Turkmenistan must submit the request to the migration service before you apply.Required
Passport validityCheck your passport expiry date before booking anything.
6 months beyond intended stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your intended date of entry into Turkmenistan.Required
Blank passport pagesA blank page means a page with no stamps or visas on either side.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for the visa and entry/exit stamps.Required
Return or onward ticketHave a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight itinerary ready.
Proof of departure
You must have a confirmed return or onward ticket showing your departure from Turkmenistan. Immigration may ask to see it upon arrival.Required
Proof of fundsCarry bank statements or a credit card to demonstrate financial means if asked.
Sufficient for your stay
You may be asked to show evidence of sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay in Turkmenistan. The amount is not fixed but should match your planned activities and length of stay.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou do not need to fill out any arrival declaration form.
Not required
No arrival declaration is required for UAE passport holders entering Turkmenistan. Not required
No visa, no entry — no exceptions
Turkmenistan is one of the most restrictive countries for visa entry. UAE citizens cannot get a visa on arrival or an eVisa. You must have the visa sticker in your passport before you fly. Airlines will not let you board without it.
Letter of Invitation is the key
The LOI is the hardest part. If you're travelling for tourism, use a registered tour operator in Turkmenistan — they handle the LOI process for you. For business, your partner company must file it. Without an approved LOI, your visa application will be rejected.
Visa is not extendable
Once you're in Turkmenistan, you cannot extend your visa. Plan your stay carefully and leave before the expiry date. Overstaying can lead to heavy fines, detention, and a ban from future visits.

What happens at the border

1
Secure a Letter of Invitation
Before you can apply, your host in Turkmenistan (a company, tour operator, or individual) must obtain an approved LOI from the State Migration Service. This can take 2-4 weeks. If you're travelling as a tourist, a registered tour operator can arrange this for you.
2
Submit your application at a Turkmen embassy
Once you have the LOI, submit your completed application form, passport, photos, and fee at the nearest Turkmen embassy or consulate. In the UAE, that's the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Abu Dhabi. You may need to appear in person or send by mail, depending on the embassy's rules.
3
Wait for processing
Processing typically takes 5-10 working days, but can be longer. Check with the embassy for current timelines. You'll be notified when your visa is ready.
4
Collect your visa and travel
Pick up your passport with the visa sticker. On arrival in Turkmenistan, present your passport at immigration. The officer will check your visa and may ask for your LOI or proof of accommodation — keep copies handy.
