Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from Bulgaria. Carry a photocopy of the bio page separately in case of loss.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host ready. Officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to roughly €50 per day of your stay. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Bulgaria is not yet Schengen
Your 90-day visa-free stay in Bulgaria is separate from the 90 days you can spend in the Schengen area. But if you enter Bulgaria from a Schengen country, the total time in both zones combined cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.
Overstaying is serious
Overstaying even a day can trigger fines, a ban, and deportation. Track your entry and exit dates carefully. Set a reminder 10 days before your 90-day limit.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before travel
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry). Book a return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save confirmations as screenshots or PDFs on your phone.
2
Arrive at Bulgarian border
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport and supporting documents ready. The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date.
3
Present documents to border officer
Hand over your passport. If asked, show your return ticket and accommodation booking. Answer questions about your stay (purpose, duration, where you're staying).
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry. You're now allowed to stay up to 90 days. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it for exit checks.
