What happens at the border

1
Apply for your visa online
Go to gov.uk/apply-uk-visa and complete the Standard Visitor visa application. You'll need to create an account, fill in personal details, travel plans, and upload supporting documents.
2
Attend a biometric appointment
After submitting online, book an appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Buenos Aires (or your nearest centre). Bring your passport, appointment confirmation, and any requested documents. They'll take your photo and fingerprints.
3
Wait for a decision
Standard processing takes about 3 weeks, but can be longer during peak seasons. You'll receive an email with the outcome. If approved, your passport will be returned with a visa vignette sticker.
4
Travel to the UK
Arrive at any UK airport or port. At immigration, present your passport with the visa sticker. The officer may ask about your trip — have your return ticket and accommodation details ready. They rarely ask for more than that.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing takes about 3 weeks from your biometric appointment. During busy periods (summer, holidays) it can take 4–6 weeks. You can pay for priority service (5 working days) or super priority (next working day) if available — costs start at around £500 extra.
As of 2026, the fee is £115 for a 6-month visa. Longer visas (2, 5, or 10 years) cost more. You pay when you submit the online application.
No. The Standard Visitor visa does not allow extensions. You must leave before your visa expires. If you want to stay longer, you'd need a different visa type (e.g., work or study) applied for before travel.
Not during the application, but you should have one booked before you travel. Immigration officers at the border may ask to see it. A flexible or refundable ticket is a good idea in case plans change.
Your visa is linked to the passport number. If you get a new passport, you must transfer the visa to the new passport — contact the UK Visas and Immigration office. It's easier to renew your passport before applying.
No. You cannot take paid or unpaid work, start a business, or study for more than 30 days. You can attend meetings, conferences, or short courses (up to 30 days). For longer study, you need a Student visa.
You'll receive a letter explaining the reason. Common reasons include insufficient funds, unclear travel plans, or not proving ties to Argentina. You can reapply — address the issues in your new application. There's no ban for a single refusal.
