Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from Greece
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Greece. This is a Schengen-wide rule. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Greek airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. A bus or ferry ticket to a non-Schengen country works. Budget airlines flying into Athens are especially strict about this.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter
Have a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a host's invitation letter. Officers at passport control sometimes ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement, cash, or credit card
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you can support yourself during your stay. Greek immigration rarely asks for it, but having a recent statement in your bag avoids any hassle.Recommended
Overstay fines add up fast
If you overstay even by a day, you'll be fined €50 per day. The fine is collected at the airport when you leave. Multiple overstays can lead to a Schengen-wide ban.
Travel insurance is not required but strongly recommended
Greece has excellent public healthcare, but emergency treatment for tourists can be expensive. A basic travel insurance policy covering medical evacuation costs around $30–50 for a 2-week trip.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at passport control
At Athens (ATH), Thessaloniki (SKG), or Heraklion (HER), join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will scan your passport and may ask a few questions — typical ones are 'How long are you staying?' and 'Where are you staying?'.
2
Present documents if asked
If the officer asks for your return ticket or accommodation, have them ready on your phone or printed. Most of the time they just stamp your passport and wave you through. The whole process takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs. There are no customs checks for personal items. You're free to enter Greece.

Frequently asked questions

No, not as a tourist. The 90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen area. If you want to stay longer, you need a national long-stay visa (D visa) for work, study, or other purposes. Alternatively, you can apply for a Greece Digital Nomad Visa (€75 fee, 1 year renewable) if you work remotely and earn at least €3,500/month.
No. Argentine passport holders do not need a transit visa to change planes in Greece, as long as you stay airside and do not enter the Schengen area. This applies at Athens (ATH), Thessaloniki (SKG), and Heraklion (HER).
You will be fined €50 per day (approx. $55 USD) upon departure. Overstays are recorded in the Schengen Information System and can affect future travel. If you overstay by more than a few days, you may be banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 3 years.
Technically, no. The visa-free stay is for tourism and business meetings only. However, many digital nomads work remotely without issues. If you want to be fully legal, apply for the Greece Digital Nomad Visa before you travel.
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from Greece. If it expires sooner, you will be denied boarding by the airline. Renew your passport before you travel.
No, not for stays under 90 days. Hotels register your stay automatically. If you're staying with friends or family, your host should notify the local police station within 3 days of your arrival — but this is rarely enforced for short visits.
It's risky. Immigration officers may ask for proof that you will leave within 90 days. A one-way ticket without a return or onward booking can lead to denial of entry. Always have a return or onward ticket.
