Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Apply for a Lesotho eVisa at the official Immigration Department portal. Processing takes 3–5 business days, so submit at least a week before departure. Print the approval letter and carry it with your passport — immigration at Moshoeshoe I International Airport will stamp you in.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your Argentine passport must be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in Lesotho. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Lesotho
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. A bus or flight ticket to South Africa or any neighbouring country works. Without one, you risk being refused entry at the border.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed hotel reservation or a letter from your host ready. Immigration may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least 2,000 ZAR (or equivalent) per day. Lesotho immigration rarely checks this for short visits, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Don't forget your printed eVisa
Immigration at Moshoeshoe I International Airport will not let you in without a printed copy of your eVisa approval. A screenshot on your phone is not enough — they need a physical document to stamp.
Healthcare is limited
Lesotho's public hospitals are basic. For anything serious, you'll be evacuated to South Africa. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly advised — a single hospital stay can cost hundreds of dollars per day.
eVisa is straightforward
The online application is simple — just fill in your details, upload a photo and passport scan, and pay $50 USD. You'll get the approval by email in a few days. No need to visit an embassy.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the Lesotho Immigration Department portal. Fill in your details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the $50 USD fee with a credit card. You'll get an approval letter by email in 3–5 business days. Print it and keep it with your passport.
2
Pack your documents
Before you leave for the airport, double-check: printed eVisa approval, passport (valid for your whole stay), return/onward ticket confirmation, and a hotel booking or host letter. Also have a bank statement or credit card ready — just in case.
3
Arrive at Moshoeshoe I International Airport (MSU)
When you land in Maseru, head to the immigration counter. Hand over your passport and printed eVisa. The officer will stamp you in for up to 30 days. The whole process takes 10–15 minutes if your documents are in order.
4
Exit Lesotho
When you leave, go through immigration at the airport or land border. They'll check your passport and stamp you out. If you overstayed, you'll pay a fine of $10 USD per day (max $200 USD) at the departure point.

Frequently asked questions

Processing takes 3–5 business days. Apply at least a week before your flight to be safe. If you apply on a Friday, expect it by the following Wednesday or Thursday.
Yes, you can extend once for another 30 days. Go to the Lesotho Immigration Department headquarters in Maseru (Corner of Kingsway and Moshoeshoe Road). Bring your passport, two passport photos, and the extension fee (around $50 USD). They're open Monday–Friday 08:00–16:30.
You'll be charged a fine of $10 USD per day, up to a maximum of $200 USD. You pay this at the airport or border post when you leave. Overstaying by more than a few days can also get you flagged for future visits.
Only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever transmission risk (like parts of South America or Africa). If you're flying directly from Argentina, you don't need it. But if you've been in a risk country within 6 days before arriving, you'll need the vaccine certificate.
Yes, you can cross at any land border (like Maseru Bridge or Van Rooyen's Gate). You'll need the same eVisa and documents. The border posts are open daily, typically 06:00–22:00. Have your printed eVisa ready for the immigration officer.
Lesotho is generally safe for tourists, but petty crime (pickpocketing, bag snatching) happens in Maseru and other towns. Avoid walking alone at night. Roads outside Maseru can be rough — rent a 4x4 if you're driving. Medical facilities are limited; serious issues require evacuation to South Africa.
The local currency is the Lesotho loti (LSL), but South African rand (ZAR) is accepted everywhere at a 1:1 rate. Bring rand in cash — ATMs are common in Maseru but scarce elsewhere. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and larger shops, but not at smaller vendors or rural areas.
