Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the full 180 days you plan to stay in El Salvador. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Recommended
Immigration officers at San Salvador airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a bus ticket out of the country ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Hotel bookings or a letter of invitation from a host can speed up the immigration process. Officers may ask where you're staying — have the address and contact number handy.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Carry at least $500 USD in cash or have a credit card with a visible limit. Immigration can ask to see you have enough money for your stay — a bank statement or card works fine.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity at check-in. If you have less than 6 months remaining, they may refuse to let you board — even if El Salvador would let you in. Renew early.
Keep a digital copy of your documents
Save screenshots of your passport info page, return ticket, and accommodation booking on your phone. If you lose your passport, these make replacement much easier at the Argentine consulate.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Make sure your passport has 6+ months validity and at least 1 blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots or PDFs on your phone.
2
Arrive at El Salvador International Airport (SAL)
After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There are separate queues for Salvadoran citizens and foreigners. Join the 'Extranjeros' line.
3
Present your passport and supporting documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Answer clearly — they usually speak Spanish, but English is understood at the main airport.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (up to 180 days). Check the stamp before leaving the counter — make sure the dates are correct.
5
Collect your luggage and proceed through customs
After immigration, go to baggage claim, then customs. You may be asked to declare items over $500 or restricted goods. Green channel means no inspection; red channel means a bag check.
