Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid only for the time you plan to stay in Argentina. Airlines may ask for 6 months validity — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Argentina
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at Ezeiza and other entry points. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and contact number. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to around 500 USD equivalent. Immigration may ask if you look underfunded — better to have it.Recommended
No visa needed for 90 days
Austrian passport holders can enter Argentina visa-free for up to 90 days. This is a straightforward process — just show your passport and a return ticket.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding, and immigration checks it on arrival. Don't risk it.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Ezeiza or Aeroparque
At Buenos Aires' main international airport (EZE) or domestic airport (AEP), follow signs to 'Migraciones' (Immigration). There are separate queues for Argentine citizens and foreigners. Join the 'Extranjeros' line.
2
Present your passport and ticket
Hand over your passport and, if asked, your return/onward ticket. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and usually ask how long you're staying. Answer honestly (up to 90 days).
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually a 'nothing to declare' green channel. If you have items to declare (expensive electronics, large amounts of cash), use the red channel.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave before day 90. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different type of visa (e.g., a temporary residence permit) at the Argentine immigration office (Dirección Nacional de Migraciones) in Buenos Aires before your 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Argentine immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced.
No, if you're transiting through an Argentine airport and staying airside (not passing through immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you leave the transit area, you'll need to go through immigration and the visa-free rules apply.
Technically yes, but you'll need to show proof of onward travel (a return or onward ticket) at immigration. Without it, you may be denied entry. It's safer to have a booked ticket out of Argentina.
No, Argentina does not require an online arrival declaration for Austrian passport holders. You just fill out the standard immigration card on the plane (if provided) or at the counter.
Overstaying is a violation. You'll be fined (around 300–500 ARS per day overstayed, but amounts change frequently) and may be banned from re-entering Argentina for a period. Always leave on time.
Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism only. Remote work for a foreign employer is a gray area — many digital nomads do it without issues, but it's not officially allowed. If you plan to work, consider a digital nomad visa (Argentina introduced one in 2022).
