Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for an Azerbaijan eVisa at evisa.gov.az at least 3 working days before departure. The eVisa is a single-entry permit valid for 30 days. Print the approved eVisa and carry it with your passport — border control will check it before issuing your entry stamp.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Austrian passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Azerbaijan. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by law, but airlines may enforce 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration at Baku Heydar Aliyev Airport routinely asks for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or onward ticket ready. Overstaying the 30-day eVisa period results in a fine of 200 AZN (~€110) per day.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Hotel booking confirmations or a letter of invitation from your host in Azerbaijan can speed up immigration. Border officers rarely demand it, but having a printed copy avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Carry evidence of sufficient funds for your stay — a bank statement or credit card showing at least 500 AZN (~€270) per week. Immigration may ask if you look underprepared, but it's not a standard check.Recommended
eVisa is the only option for tourism
Austrian passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival. You must have the eVisa approved before you travel. The official portal is evisa.gov.az — avoid third-party sites that charge extra.
Passport validity counts from entry, not departure
Many travellers mistakenly count from their departure date. Azerbaijan requires 6 months validity from the day you land. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before applying.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Azerbaijan eVisa portal (evisa.gov.az). Fill in your passport details, travel dates, and upload a passport-style photo. Pay the fee (approx. $25 USD) with a credit card. You'll receive a confirmation email with a reference number.
2
Wait for approval
Processing usually takes 3 working days. You'll get an email with your eVisa PDF attached. Check your spam folder if it doesn't arrive. The eVisa is valid for 90 days from issue, for a single entry up to 30 days.
3
Prepare your documents
Print a copy of the eVisa, or save it on your phone. Also have your return ticket, hotel booking, and passport ready. Keep them in your carry-on, not checked luggage.
4
Arrive at the airport in Azerbaijan
At Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport, head to the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport and eVisa (printed or digital). The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel address. Answer clearly. You'll get a stamp and can proceed to baggage claim.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing takes 3 working days. There's also an urgent option (3 hours) for about $55 USD. Apply at least a week before your trip to be safe.
No, the eVisa is single-entry and cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave and re-apply, or check if you qualify for a different visa type.
Not strictly — a digital copy on your phone is accepted. But printing a backup is smart in case your phone dies or the screen is hard to read in bright light.
Your eVisa application will be rejected. Renew your passport first, then apply. The 6 months are counted from your entry date into Azerbaijan.
Yes, the eVisa is valid for all border crossings — air, land, and sea. Just show the same documents at the checkpoint.
No, it's not required by law. But it's strongly recommended. A simple accident or illness can cost thousands. Get a policy that covers medical evacuation.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined about 300 AZN (around $175 USD) per day, and you may be banned from re-entering for a period. Don't risk it.
