Austrian passport holders can enter Bulgaria visa-free for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This has been the case since Bulgaria joined the EU, and it remains unchanged in 2026. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid on the day of entry
Your Austrian passport needs to be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Bulgaria. Bulgaria does not enforce the 6-month validity rule for EU passport holders — as long as it covers your trip dates, you are fine.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport may ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — budget airlines sometimes check this before boarding too.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter from your host. Border officers occasionally ask for this, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Have a bank statement, credit card, or cash available to show if asked. Bulgaria does not publish a fixed minimum amount, but having around €50 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Bulgaria uses the Lev, not the Euro
While Bulgaria is an EU member, it does not use the euro. The Bulgarian Lev (BGN) is the official currency. Exchange offices are common, but check rates carefully — some charge high commissions. ATMs give good rates.
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Bulgaria. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied travel. Renew early.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you travel, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), book your return/onward ticket, and confirm your first night's accommodation. Save screenshots of your booking and ticket on your phone.
2
Arrive at the airport
At Sofia Airport (SOF) or any other Bulgarian airport, proceed to the EU/EEA passport control queue. Austrian passports are processed quickly — no visa required.
3
Present your passport
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Answer clearly and honestly. The process usually takes under a minute.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp marks the start of your 90-day visa-free stay. Keep it safe — you'll need it for your departure.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, collect your bags from the carousel and proceed through customs. You're now free to explore Bulgaria.
