Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Austrian passport holders must apply for an eVisa at the official Benin eVisa portal before departure. The application takes about 10 minutes and you receive the approved visa by email within 3–7 working days. Print the approval letter and carry it with your passport to present at immigration in Cotonou.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Benin. Airlines at Vienna and other EU hubs check this before boarding. Carry at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at Cotonou Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot of your booking ready. A ticket to a neighboring country (e.g., Ghana, Togo) also satisfies this requirement.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Benin immigration may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel. Have a printed hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. A simple booking.com printout works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers occasionally ask for proof of sufficient funds for your stay. Carry a recent bank statement or a credit card with a visible limit. Around €50–€100 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Yellow fever vaccine required
You must have a yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter Benin. Without it, you may be denied entry or forced to get vaccinated at the airport (which costs time and money).
eVisa is mandatory — no visa on arrival
There is no visa-on-arrival option for Austrian passport holders. You must have an approved eVisa before you board your flight to Benin.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to evisa.gouv.bj/en, fill in your details, upload a passport photo and passport scan, and pay the fee. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days.
2
Receive and save your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get a PDF by email. Print a paper copy and save it on your phone. You'll need it to board your flight and at immigration.
3
Arrive at Cotonou Airport (COO)
At Cotonou Cadjehoun Airport, head to the immigration desk. Present your passport, eVisa, and return ticket. The officer will stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 10–20 minutes.
