Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Austrian passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Canada. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Canadian law, but airlines may enforce 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Canada
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking showing you leave Canada before your visa expires.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host with their address and contact details. Officers may ask where you're staying for the first few nights.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card statement showing enough funds for your stay. There's no fixed minimum, but CAD $1,000–$2,000 per month is a safe benchmark for a tourist.Recommended
Apply early — processing can take weeks
Canadian visitor visa processing for Austrian applicants typically takes 2–6 weeks. Biometrics appointments add time. Don't book non-refundable flights until your visa is approved.
No visa-free entry for Austrians
Unlike many European countries, Austria is not part of Canada's eTA program. You must get a visa in advance. There are no exceptions for short visits.

What happens at the border

1
Apply online for a visitor visa
Go to the IRCC website and create an account. Fill out the application form, upload your documents (passport scan, photo, travel history, proof of funds, itinerary), and pay the CAD 100 fee (about €70). Processing takes 2–6 weeks.
2
Give biometrics
After submitting, you'll get a Biometric Instruction Letter. Book an appointment at the nearest Visa Application Centre — in Vienna (address: Mariahilfer Straße 123). Bring your passport and the letter. They'll take your fingerprints and photo. Cost: CAD 85 (about €60).
3
Wait for decision
IRCC will email you when a decision is made. If approved, they'll ask you to send your passport to the VAC for visa sticker issuance. This takes another 1–2 weeks. Track the status online.
4
Arrive at a Canadian airport
When you land (e.g., Toronto Pearson, Vancouver, Montreal), go to the primary inspection kiosk. Present your passport with the visa sticker and your return ticket. The officer may ask about your plans — answer honestly. They'll stamp your passport with a visitor record valid for up to 6 months.
