Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Austrian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Kyrgyzstan. Airlines at Vienna and other EU hubs will check this before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Kyrgyzstan
Immigration at Manas International Airport in Bishkek routinely asks for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they may check it before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host. While not always checked, having it ready avoids delays at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Officers may ask how you'll support yourself. Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $50 USD per day of your stay.Recommended
No visa needed — but still prepare
You don't need a visa, but immigration can still ask for proof of onward travel and accommodation. Have digital copies ready on your phone. It's rare to be checked, but it happens.
Overstaying is costly
Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine of around 1,000 KGS ($12 USD) and a note in your record. Repeated overstays can lead to a 1-year ban. Set a reminder to leave before day 60.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the border
You'll enter through Manas International Airport (Bishkek) or a land border crossing. At the airport, follow signs to 'Passport Control' — there are separate queues for Kyrgyz citizens and foreigners. Join the 'Foreigners' line.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation booking. Have them ready on your phone or printed. They'll scan your passport, take a photo, and stamp it. The whole process takes 2–5 minutes.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's a green channel for nothing to declare and a red channel for goods over $10,000 or restricted items. Walk through the green channel unless you have something to declare.

You will be denied entry. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
For stays under 60 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer (which isn't possible under visa-free), you'd need to register. For standard tourist visits, just keep your entry stamp safe.
Yes, Austrian passport holders can enter via any land border crossing. The same visa-free rules apply. Common crossings include Chaldovar (from Kazakhstan) and Dostuk (from Uzbekistan). Expect similar document checks.
No, there is no departure tax for flights. For land exits, some border crossings may charge a small fee (around 100–200 KGS, roughly $1–2 USD), but this is rare. Always carry a bit of local currency just in case.
Report the loss to the local police immediately and get a police report. Then contact the Austrian Embassy in Bishkek (or the nearest EU consulate) for an emergency travel document. The embassy is at 215 Moskovskaya Street, Bishkek. Expect processing to take 2–5 business days.
