Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Austrian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Kazakhstan. No minimum 6-month validity is required for entry.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Kazakhstan
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. A printout or digital copy on your phone works fine.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Border officers rarely ask, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry at least 50,000 KZT (roughly $100 USD) per day in cash or a credit card. Officials almost never check this for short stays.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly. Renew early if needed.
No visa, no fee — but have your documents ready
You don't need to apply for anything in advance. Just show up with your passport, return ticket, and first night's accommodation. Immigration may ask to see them, so keep them handy.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport
You'll land at Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport (NQZ) in Astana or Almaty International Airport (ALA). Follow signs to 'Passport Control' for foreign nationals.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport with at least 6 months validity and a blank page. The officer will scan it and stamp you in. No visa or fee is required.
3
Answer questions if asked
The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly — tourism, business, or transit. Have your return ticket and hotel address ready.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. Green channel for nothing to declare, red channel for goods over €10,000 or restricted items.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave after 30 days. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban from re-entry. If you need to stay longer, you'll need to apply for a visa before travel.
No, for stays under 30 days, registration is handled automatically by your hotel or host. If you're staying in a private home, the host must register you within 5 days. For visa-free stays, this is usually not an issue.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or entry at the border. Renew your passport before traveling. There are no exceptions for this rule.
Yes, you can enter by land from Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, or China. The same visa-free rules apply — 30 days, passport valid 6 months, return ticket. Border crossings can be slow, so expect queues.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. But it's strongly recommended. Medical evacuation or a serious hospital stay can cost thousands of euros. A basic travel insurance policy covers this.
The local currency is the Kazakhstani tenge (KZT). ATMs are widely available in cities. Credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants, but cash is king in markets and smaller towns. Exchange euros or US dollars at banks or exchange offices — avoid street changers.
No mandatory vaccinations for Austrian passport holders. Routine vaccines (MMR, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, polio) should be up to date. Hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended if you're eating street food or traveling rurally. Check with your doctor 4-6 weeks before travel.
