Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Austrian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Mongolia. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Mongolian immigration, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mongolia
Immigration officers at Ulaanbaatar's Chinggis Khaan International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a digital version on your phone ready to show.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Mongolia. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least 500,000 MNT (~$150 USD) per day of your stay. Immigration may ask for proof of sufficient funds, especially if you arrive without a return ticket.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry, not departure
Make sure your passport has at least 6 months left from the day you land in Mongolia. If it expires sooner, you'll be turned away.
No extension possible
The 30-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you need more time, apply for a visa before you travel or plan a border run.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you fly, check your passport validity (6+ months beyond entry), print or save your return ticket and first night's booking. Also grab a local SIM or eSIM so you're connected on arrival.
2
Arrive at Ulaanbaatar (Chinggis Khaan International Airport)
Most flights land at the new airport (UBN). Follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' immigration. Queue up, hand over your passport and boarding pass. The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel address — have them ready. You'll get a 30-day entry stamp.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel. There's a customs declaration if you're carrying large sums of cash or restricted items. Otherwise, walk straight through the green channel.
