Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Austrian passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Mauritius. Mauritius does not enforce a strict 6-month validity rule, but airlines may check for at least 3 months beyond your departure date.Required
Return or onward ticket

Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have evidence of at least 100 USD per day of your stay, either in cash, traveler's cheques, or a bank statement. Immigration officers rarely check this for Austrian passport holders, but it's safer to have it.Recommended
No visa, no forms — just show up
Austrian passport holders get a straightforward 90-day visa-free stay. No application, no fee, no arrival card to fill. Just a valid passport and a return ticket.
Overstaying is expensive
If you stay beyond 90 days without an extension or permit, you'll face a fine of about MUR 10,000 (€200) plus possible deportation and a ban. Set a reminder on your phone.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa (like a work or retirement permit) before your 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines or deportation.
No. Even if you're just transiting through Mauritius (staying airside), you don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport, you enter under the same visa-free rules — up to 90 days.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. There's no exception for short stays.
No, there's no official requirement to show bank statements or cash. But if you look like you might be working illegally or staying indefinitely, an officer could ask. Having a credit card and a return ticket is usually enough.
Technically, no — tourist visas don't allow any work, including remote work for a foreign employer. In practice, many digital nomads do it quietly. If you want to be fully legal, look into the Mauritius Premium Visa (1-year remote work permit).
No mandatory vaccinations for Austrian travellers. But it's wise to be up-to-date on routine vaccines (MMR, DTP, polio). Yellow fever vaccine is required only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever (not Austria).
The Mauritian Rupee (MUR). ATMs are widely available at the airport and in towns. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and larger restaurants, but smaller shops and taxis prefer cash. Exchange euros at the airport or a bank for the best rate.
