Austrian passport holders can enter Norway without a visa for short stays. You can travel freely within the Schengen area, including Norway, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies for tourism, business, or visiting family in 2026.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Norway
Norway requires your passport to be valid for the duration of your stay. Since you're entering the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries, not just Norway.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Norwegian airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter of invitation from your host in Norway. Officers may ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have bank statements or cash showing you can cover your expenses. Norway is expensive — budget around 500 NOK per day for food and transport.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Your 90-day limit covers all 27 Schengen countries. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or any other Schengen country earlier in the year, that time counts toward your 90 days in Norway.
Overstaying is serious
Overstaying even by a day can lead to a fine, deportation, and a re-entry ban to the entire Schengen area. Set a reminder to leave before day 90.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Norwegian border control
At Oslo Gardermoen or any other airport, follow signs to 'Passport Control' (non-EU/EEA queue). Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date.
2
Prepare documents before the queue
Have your passport, return ticket (screenshot), and accommodation booking ready before you reach the officer. This speeds things up and avoids fumbling.
3
After passport control
Once stamped, collect your luggage and proceed through customs. There are no additional visa checks. You're free to travel within the Schengen area for up to 90 days.
