Australian passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to visit the United Kingdom for tourism, business, or transit. It's a quick online application, not a traditional visa, and you'll need to complete it before you fly. The eTA is valid for multiple entries over two years, but remember it's not extendable.

Apply for United Kingdom eVisaRequired for most visa-exempt visitors since 2024-2025. Not a visa — approval is linked electronically to your passport. Apply before you travel.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your eTA online
Go to the official UK government eTA website or download the 'UK ETA' app. Fill in your personal details, passport info, and answer a few security questions. Pay the £10 fee with a credit or debit card.
2
Wait for approval
Most eTA applications are approved within minutes, but it can take up to 3 working days. You'll receive an email confirmation. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have approval.
3
Check in and board
At the airport, the airline will verify your eTA is linked to your passport. If it's not approved, you won't be allowed to board. Your eTA is electronically linked, so no paper document is needed.
4
Arrive at UK border control
On arrival, use the ePassport gates if you're 10 or older and have a biometric passport. Otherwise, join the 'UK Border' queue. Have your passport ready; the officer may ask about your trip and accommodation.

Frequently asked questions

The eTA fee is £10 (about AU$19 as of 2026). You pay online when you apply. There are no additional charges unless you use a third-party service, which isn't necessary.
The eTA is valid for 2 years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You can make multiple visits during that period, but each stay is limited to 6 months.
No, the eTA is not extendable. If you need to stay longer than 6 months, you must apply for a different visa category before your eTA expires. Overstaying can lead to penalties and future entry issues.
No, one approved eTA covers multiple visits for up to 2 years. Just make sure your passport hasn't changed — if you get a new passport, you'll need a new eTA.
If denied, you'll receive an email explaining why. You can reapply, but you must address the reason. For complex cases, you may need to apply for a standard visitor visa instead. Check the UK government website for guidance.
Yes, if you're 10 or older and have a biometric passport (most Australian passports are). This lets you skip the manned desks. If the gates aren't working, join the regular queue — it's usually quick for Australians.
No, it's an electronic travel authorisation, not a visa. It's simpler and faster to get. You don't need to attend an interview or submit biometrics. It's just a pre-screening that links to your passport.
