Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Latvia. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required for entry, but airlines may enforce a 3-month validity rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Riga Airport will ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. A bus, train, or flight ticket to a non-Schengen country works — just have it ready on your phone or printed.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying for the first few nights. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from a friend in Latvia with their address is enough — keep a copy handy.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Latvia doesn't have a fixed daily minimum, but officers expect you to cover accommodation, food, and transport. A bank statement or credit card with a few hundred euros available usually satisfies them.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Latvia is part of the Schengen zone. Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all 27 Schengen countries. You cannot 'reset' the clock by visiting another Schengen country — the 90 days are cumulative.
Border officers may ask for proof of funds
While not always checked, you should be able to show you can support yourself. A credit card or a recent bank statement showing sufficient funds is usually enough.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Riga International Airport (RIX)
After landing, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Border Control'. There are separate queues for EU/EEA and non-EU passports. Join the 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU' line.
2
Present your documents to the border officer
Hand over your passport, and if asked, your return ticket and accommodation booking. The officer may ask the purpose of your visit and how long you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Get your passport stamped
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible and the date is correct. This stamp starts your 90-day Schengen stay.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After border control, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then through customs (green channel for most tourists). You're now in Latvia.
