What happens at the border

1
Apply for your eVisa online
Go to the PNG Immigration eVisa portal and fill out the application. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, accommodation info, and a return ticket. Upload any required documents (passport scan, photo, etc.) and pay the fee. Processing typically takes 5–10 business days, so apply at least 3 weeks before your trip.
2
Wait for approval
After submitting, you'll get a reference number. Check your email regularly — they may request additional documents. Approval comes as a visa grant letter or sticker. Save a copy on your phone and print a physical copy to carry with you.
3
Arrive at Port Moresby (or other entry point)
At Jacksons International Airport (POM), join the queue for foreign passport holders. Have your passport, visa approval, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will check your documents and stamp you in. Be polite and patient — it can be slow.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim. Customs may ask to inspect your bags — declare any restricted items. Then exit into the arrivals hall. If you're connecting to a domestic flight, follow the signs for domestic transfers.

Frequently asked questions

No. There is no visa on arrival for tourism. You must apply and receive approval before you travel. The eVisa is the standard route — apply online at evisa.immigration.gov.pg.
Typically 5–10 business days, but it can take longer during peak periods. Apply at least 3 weeks before your trip to be safe. You'll get a reference number when you submit, and approval comes via email.
The visa fee varies depending on the type and duration. Expect around AUD 100–150 for a single-entry tourist visa. Check the PNG Immigration website for current fees — they can change without much notice.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's shorter, renew your passport before applying for the visa. Airlines enforce this strictly — you'll be denied boarding otherwise.
Only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever transmission. Australia is not a yellow fever country, so this doesn't apply unless you've recently travelled to an affected area. If you have, bring your vaccination certificate.
Extensions are possible but not guaranteed. You'll need to apply at the PNG Immigration office in Port Moresby (or regional offices in Lae or Mount Hagen) before your visa expires. Fees and processing times vary — expect around PGK 100 per month. Don't overstay without approval — fines are steep.
Have your passport with the visa sticker, your return ticket (printed or on your phone), and your accommodation booking confirmation. Keep them together in your carry-on. Also have proof of funds ready in case they ask.
