Bosnia and Herzegovina passport holders can enter Bulgaria without a visa for short stays. You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This has been the case since Bulgaria joined the EU visa-free regime.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Bulgaria. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Bulgarian law, but some airlines may ask for 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave within the 90-day visa-free limit.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Border officers may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address is enough. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
You may be asked to show you have enough money for your stay. A bank statement or credit card showing access to around €50 per day is usually sufficient.Recommended
Bulgaria is not yet in Schengen
Although Bulgaria is an EU member, it is not part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free stay is separate from the Schengen 90/180 rule. However, days spent in Bulgaria count toward the 90-day limit for the Schengen Area if you also travel there.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before travel
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry). Book a return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots or printouts of all confirmations.
2
Arrive at Bulgarian border
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport and supporting documents ready.
3
Present documents to border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket or accommodation proof. Answer questions clearly. They'll stamp your passport with entry date and allowed stay.
4
Receive entry stamp and proceed
Once stamped, you're free to enter. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when leaving to prove you didn't overstay.
