Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in Liechtenstein. Since Liechtenstein is in the Schengen zone, border officers may ask for proof of onward travel within the 90-day visa-free limit.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Have a return ticket or onward ticket to a non-Schengen country. Immigration at the border may ask for it, especially if you arrive by land from Switzerland or Austria.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Liechtenstein. Border officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient means for the stay
Be ready to show you have enough money for your trip — around 100 CHF per day is a safe benchmark. Credit cards and cash both work.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 rule
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to all Schengen countries combined. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, Italy, etc., that counts toward your 90 days. Check your days carefully using the Schengen calculator.
No border control between Switzerland and Liechtenstein
There are no passport checks when crossing from Switzerland into Liechtenstein. But you must have entered Switzerland legally first. Your Swiss entry stamp is your proof of legal presence in the Schengen Area.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Schengen border
Liechtenstein is in the Schengen Area but has no airport. You'll enter via Switzerland (by train, car, or bus from Zurich Airport or Buchs). At the Swiss border, you'll go through Swiss immigration. Show your passport, and if asked, your return ticket and accommodation details.
2
Get your passport stamped
Swiss border officers will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp starts your 90-day clock. Keep the stamp visible — it's your proof of legal entry.
3
Travel to Liechtenstein
Once you're in Switzerland, there are no border checks between Switzerland and Liechtenstein. You can take a train to Buchs SG then a bus to Vaduz, or drive directly. No additional paperwork needed.
4
Enjoy your stay
You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries. Keep your passport and travel documents handy in case of random checks.

Frequently asked questions

No visa is needed. You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, business, or family visits.
Fly into Zurich Airport (ZRH) in Switzerland, then take a train to Buchs SG (about 1.5 hours), then a bus to Vaduz (about 30 minutes). Alternatively, drive from Zurich or Munich. You'll go through Swiss immigration at the airport or border.
No. The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. You must leave the Schengen Area before day 90. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
You'd need a national visa or residence permit from Liechtenstein. Apply at the Liechtenstein Embassy in Bern, Switzerland, well in advance. This is for work, study, or family reunification — not tourism.
No. Both are in the Schengen Area. The same 90-day visa-free rule applies to all 27 Schengen countries combined. Your entry stamp from Switzerland covers Liechtenstein too.
Always carry your passport. Police can ask for ID at any time. Keep a copy of your return ticket and accommodation booking on your phone or as a printout.
Not mandatory, but strongly recommended. Medical costs in Liechtenstein are high — a simple hospital visit can cost hundreds of Swiss Francs. A basic travel insurance policy covering medical emergencies is cheap and smart.
